Not working for over three months is no fun but i've a interview just outside Oxford tomorrow, but traveling from just outside Gloucester its a 43 mile journey. Now i'm not adversed to driving that far,i've done it many tmes before and with the jobs in my field they are at your own expence,so is it quite normal practice to travel that far to work.Just like to know if its me a bit whingey.

By the way I do need a job!

But 43 miles is not far is it? Not if you really need to work.

I did a 100 mile round trip every working day for 16 years, I now drive further but stay over in hotels or if within reason do a probable 200 plus round trip if I need to be back at home, it all depends on your outlook to it.

At the moment I drive just under 50 miles to work, and then back home again. For my new job that I'll be starting in two weeks I'll be taking the train as it's over 120 miles in total, but the distance I have to travel is the price I'm willing to pay to live in a gorgeous area.
If the pay was low then obviously I'd be looking at a job nearer to home.

That's not too far but could be bad depending on traffic and hours. I'd try it for a while - if it is particularly onerous you can consider finding a hotel/b&b/flat to stay in a few nights a week.

currently only do about 8.5 miles each way. But have had to do over 50 miles each way for 2 years, got fed up with this, so moved house to be closer to work.

However I think the journey and the time it will take is more important then the miles. For example 25 miles on nice quite country back rounds is a hell of a lot nicer then 15 miles on the M25.......and probably quicker too

I know someone who does 120 miles EACH WAY every day, that's mental.

I'm expecting a 120 mile round trip for my next job and am not looking forward to it, but I'd rather be living where I am than living 15 miles away like I used to.

C'est la vie, if you want the job you either commute or move.

my commute is about 22miles each way and is the closest i've ever lived to work.

used to do a 120mile everyday, yet it took me the same time as my mates who were going 5miles on a bus.

I do a tad short of 100 mile round trip everyday, and have been for 7 years.

Still I can get home before the wife and she works 4 miles from home and has to take the bus.

You get used to it. I did have to do 240 mile round trip 3 times a week for the last contract, now thats a pain.

I do a round trip of just under 120 miles a day to go to work. I'm a shift worker though so I'm usually travelling when the traffic is light. It normally takes me just over an hour each way which I consider about the limit for me. I feel that 43 miles would certainly be a reasonable amount to travel each day.

I do about 150 - 200 miles per day, and just swapped my 50mpg diesel for a 25mpg V6 R32... Ooops.

Furthest was when I comuted from Glos (further south than you JVR) to Jaguar Land Rover in Gaydon, 90 miles by motorway and 70 miles cross country. Took about an hour and a half.

It wasn't that bad, you just get used to it, 43 miles wouldn't phase me at all.

Depends how much you want the job really? I had an interview at Aston Martin today (again based at Gaydon) and I'm so desperate the comute didn't even cross my mind.

You do get used to it, the furthest I went was about 50 miles for one summer job when I was at university.

For my last job I had a 2 minute scooter ride to work and it was great. I could go home for a snooze at lunch time.

I do that at least 3-4 times a week, it is worth it as long as you are paid enough! Also, a 120 mile trip outside rush hour is fine, in rush hour its a bit of a pain. I normally use a bike to make it a bit quicker.

I'm happy to do silly miles to get the cash, the way I look at it is that a bit of sacrifice now may mean I much longer retirement, for me thats worth it.

It's also worth it if you are self employed and get your 40p per mile tax offset.

I used to pay <7% tax while at JLR

Well done. I'm sure the travelling won't be too bad. I've been doing my commute for the past 3 1/2 years now and you'll soon get used to it.

Well done!

But think seriously about moving closer to Oxford. Mate of mine commuted Chelt - Oxford for 2 years, and it nearly drove him crazy, knackered out 2 cars and gave him 2 accidents. Every time we'd meet he'd spend at least 10 mins swearing about being stuck behind lorries on the A40, especially the "Wincanton wkers".

The commute did him no good at all, and he was a changed person when it stopped.
