Eh?

He's only been president for five minutes. What's all that about then?

I must be missing something.....

According to the article in the online Times the closing date for nominations was a mere two weeks after he started his term in january. Something doesn't add up...

A surprising decision to say the least. Fairly scathing comment in the Times.

JHTdC. It's just as well they made last year's award to such a worthy name or they might get a bit of a reputation otehrwise.

MMmmmm, it does seem far, far too early doesn't it. A nobel prize should be for what has been achieved, not what you've said you'd like to achieve (otherwise they'll have to start handing them out to every drunk person!)

I was going to post a thread about this as well "Back slapping bks or worthy of title".
To me it seems the former, as he seems to be the in thing - Bit like Tony Blair during his time of office being given all sorts of titles, medals and general back slapping.

I'd like him to reject it and suggest people wait until the end of his term of office.

Partisan backslapping is all I can say, I would say the prize had become a joke, but that happened when they awarded the self serving Al Goron his Nobel Peace Prize

The Peace Prize has always been a bit of a political choice. The science prizes are still worthwhile but the peace prize(s) are more dubious IMO.

This is absurd and devalues the prize yet further. I'm still in the Obama-is-a-force-for-good camp, but how on Earth can it be said that he has achieved anything worthy of this after nine months in the White House? In fact it's worse than that - apparently the cut-off date for nominations was 11 days after Obama took office.

Faute de mieux can be the only explanation.

Still, previous winners such as Arafat, Al Gore and Kofi Annan don't exactly make the bar look high.

how to devalue such a prize in one foul swoop

hows about giving it to someone who actually deserves it?

Well he hasn't actually started any wars - yet. Better than his predecessor at any rate...

The peace prize is a joke anyway. If Arafat can win one anyone can.
