I need to remove all four road wheels so that I can get the alloys refurbished.
Having read the relevant threads I am comfortable with where to place the trolley jack etc,but want to confirm where to place the axle stands. I am assuming that they need to be placed under the rubber jack mounting points on all four corners, can someone confirm that this is correct please?

It's one place you can put them, and in light of trying to find other spots, probably the best idea.

Once you get 2 axle stands under, and jack the car for the next two, go back and take a look at the first two, as they can start to lean.

You might find it's best to "reset" the positions once all 4 are up, just by lifting it off the stand by a fraction, and setting it up again, as the jacking can start to push them off the stands.

Who is refurbishing your wheels? Can you take before and after pics?

Many thanks for the advice.I have purchased two sets of axle stands to support the car, but the shape of the "prop looks a little like the end of a "Y" obviously to support an axle...

If I am going to use these to support the vehicle on its jacking points, what should I do to ensure that the stands do not damage them or dig into the floor of the car?

I have done this once with a 530i Champagne edition, I had wheels refurbed on. I jacked one side of the car from middle using a long peice of 2x4" wood to spread the load.

This left the jacking points free to place the axle stands under.

Last time i did this I got hold of some snotty cheap wheels from ebay and did a wheel replacement while mine were away.

Didnt drive the car but felt better it was on wheels rather than jack/bricks/wood etc

Got to love/hate it when the search facility isnt working.

Anyway, im interested in buying a trolly jack for occassional use (mainly for taking wheels off and cleaning them).

So, can any one suggest a decent but not too expensive trolly jack for the M5? I have seen one in Costco for around £80 with a 1.8tonne limit would this be suitable or would Halfords be cheaper.

Do most jacks fit under the sills?

The Costco ally jack is a good item, very low entry and more than up to the job, it is also lighter to move around. Highly recommended.

I recently bought a 2 tonne trolley jack from halfords. I think it was 30 quid but it does seem a little on the flimsy side although no problems lifting the M. I bought it to replace my previous Halfords jack which has finally passed away after 19 years of abuse.
They do a 2.5 tonne version I think which might be more suitable, I have a feeling its around £50.
