Hi All,
Living a fairly straightforward life I'm rarely exposed,thankfully, to our glorious British subculture and have become slightly shocked / fascinated in equal measure by what you guys refer to as 'Trolls'.
I've read some of the links and it is incredible.
What is the provenance of the term and are these people simply mentally ill or just complete bottom feeders?
Has anyone been uncovered who actually had an array of fancy cars and then just bulls
tted more than required? That would be a great case study for a Psychology thesis.

Thats a bit harsh.
I hadn't heard the phrase before and assumed it was "Pistonheads" specific.
Happy now with the Wikipedia description although it appears that on here its folk who are just telling lies that get the 'troll' badge.
Surely prompting an emotional response is ok and not an instant 'troll' offence?

Depends, if the intention is purely to elicit an emotional response without moving a discussion forward, more to obfuscate any further discussion, then trolling it is.Trolling in its purest form is forwarding a viewpoint that you may utterly disagree with just in order to provoke a response.
Alternatively, you could just try studying the culture of a forum and posting a historically inflammatory topic.
Such as 'Honda S2000s: no torque = no point"
or 'I'm faster without being able to heel and toe.'

I'm not a psycologist but there are a few id's that imo have severe personality disorders that have planned several alter-egos to such a meticulous level that you wonder how they keep themselves up to date with their various id current affairs.

Yeah I agree, sort of playing devil's advocate but with the only motive to get your own entertainment at whatever cost.But sometimes a troll can play the first move (with the start of a thread).
