what would stop an ak47 bullet at distance?

couldnt sleep as usual so watched full metal jacket last night. at the end some people get shot by a sniper and the others dont want to go get them in the open as they would be shot at by a single sniper with an ak47.

watching it I thought why not grab anything metal they could find as a shield or a large door or something. this leads to the question what would they have needed to be safe? would this have worked? sniper is a long way in front of them so if they could have found any barrier to move, it would work? whats the thinnest modern material they could have used too? could you have a collapsible kevlar shield for example? or does the ak47 own your arse

AK-47 doesn't have the accuracy needed for long shots - the recoil is something horrid as well. Stand still then?

When I shot one at a stag do the instructor said the round would go through three cars. You'd have to be behind the engine block or a long way away - something like a mile.

There are several different types of 7.62x39mm rounds. Vietnam era was probably M43. It can be stopped by body armour. Also note that the standard 7.62 round does not "tumble" (under normal conditions) thus impacting it's ability to cause tissue damage.

What could stop it? Probably not thin metal but certainly concrete blocks, walls, etc would deflect it.

PS: Although an AK47 was used in fmj, it was probably supposed to represent a Dragunov which uses the 7.62x54mmR round and is a whole different animal
