I've possibly got the chance of getting hold of really nice M5 and I was wondering what the R8 was worth as trade in is not an option. As it says its Heron White on an 09 plate with 1200 miles. The car has a Wortec system fitted and is currently sitting on the standard wheels which have been powder coated black, however I also have a set of the 20" upgrade wheels. Oh I forgot, its also a MANUAL
The only issue I see with selling it privately is that there is outstanding finance on it so I'm not sure how I would go about selling it i.e. would I have to settle the monies first or could there be something done where the buyer pays it to the finance company etc with the log book being held with say the bank????

Anyone been in this position and how did they deal with it

cheers

I bought a car once which had outstanding fimance on it. The owner got a statement for the settlement amount, I signed something saying I would pay it off and pay the owner the difference. All went smoothly but I don't know if that was the correct way of doing it ?

If the new owner doesn't pay the amount of then it isn't their car so its worth their while doing it - unless of course they're a crook ?

Bad idea. You will lose lots on the sale and lots more on the M5, I'd stick with the R8 TBH....unless you have a good job and live at home with your Mum.

Get your settlement figure and show it to the punter, when the sale is agreed, have him do a bankers draft to them for the outstanding finance and a draft to you for the balance.

Simples.....

Re the original question, not as much as you`d like I`m guessing.
You may find that a dealer who wasn`t aware how low these cars got may offer you more than an individual who does.

Good luck.

Once you have a settlement figure for the finace the finance company will verbally confirm the amount to the buyer (they wont tell the buyer but if the buyer quotes a figure they will just say 'if that amount is sent it will clear the balance').

Best way to settle finance is 2 bank drafts, one to the finance company, one drawn to you on the balance.

BOTH of you should witness that draft being posted as if it does not go for any reason, the new buyer wont own the car, and you will still be liable for the debt. So it is both your interests to see the draft put in the post.

Bit of a pain, but worth it for peace of mind.

Depending on the finance company they may even take a debit card over the phone so thats another option, the buyer could do it over the phone when collecting it.

Best to have the settlement in writing so they can see it, dont request these too often as it does go against your credit score from what ive been told.

Bear in mind the above are assuming that you owe less to the finance company than the car is currently worth, otherwise you're the one paying the difference off too...

cheers for the responses, gives me a few ideas. The finance is less than the cars value

nobody willing to put a figure against the value? (come on be sensible)

Its a difficult one to put a figure on with the mega deals that have been floating about on the new ones.

Best advice is look at the prices of others up for sale and base it somewhere around those ones depending on how much you want to sell it.

As a 'guestimate' id say around £22-23k.

White and manual seems in demand as a combination, as they first in 'the big sell off'.

Some people are looking for exactly that over on Vxronline, so it may be worth posting there. There is a thread on the subject so it could be an easy sell.

I paid £22,888 for mine as a brand spanker but had to take a black one as white was sold out.

Is its mint, the suggest with white being pretty scarce you might get £22-£23k for it.

A dealer would probably offer you £18-£20k.

If you found a dealer that didnt know about the mega discounts as in outside of the main dealer network they actually book trade price wise North of £25k so may click that way!

Better car? - barely

Badge? - maybe 15 years ago.

Had a run in one last week, much less space and comfort, no more toys as standard than the R8, marginally better handling - more understeer though, can't easily get any more out of them, twice the cost to buy, maintain and the depreciation and too common.

Both are great, fun cars, but I know which I prefer.
