Hotels in Singapore
Discussion
Afternoon all,
I am departing on November 7th for a three-week trip in Asia, flying into Singapore and spending 2 nights before getting the night train to KL, then up through Thailand and flying out of BKK.
Any hotel recommendations for Singapore? Nothing overly extravagant but up to about £150 for the 2 nights would be OK. A pool would be a definite plus!

Stayed in the Intercontinental for the F1, rooms were very nice, as were the dining rooms and bars. Pool area was small but never busy, and the gym could do with renovation, but overall a very nice place to stay in a pretty good central location (3 stops MRT or 20 mins walk to Orchard road, 10 mins walk to the circuit/waterfront area).

I'm a cheapskate too
Stayed in a place in Little India when I was there. Clean and cheap for Singapore. Sorry I can't remember the name of it, but there are tons of independent places around there, most of which looked fairly decent.
I'd stay in Little India too. No specific recommendations - I'm sure the Rough Guide has a good idea. I found Singapore quite dull, and relatively expensive. Little India is interesting and lively (for Singapore), and eats / sleeps won't be too dear.

Add me to the no fan of Singapore club either. Can't say I've much love for Bangkok either, but the rest of Thailand is lovely. Hong Kong is probably my favourite city in the world.
In Hong Kong, the energy and mayhem of the place just sweeps you along, tourist, expat or whatever.

Funnily enough a lot of people I meet aren't too fussed about Singapore, however I went a few times and stayed with a friend and loved it.
I think it's true of most places. If someone knows the place, knows where to go, what to do and how to speak to people then most places can be fun. In Thailand I've always found it very easy to get talking to people who will treat you like a friend after half an hour, and it actually takes some effort to just live in a tourist bubble. Of course this will be different in Pattaya, Phuket etc. In Hong Kong, the energy and mayhem of the place just sweeps you along, tourist, expat or whatever.
Currently staying at the 'M' hotel in Tanjong Pagar, it's very nice, if a little bland.
MRT is just down the road, the Train Staion to Malaysia is just up the road and China Town is a 10 minute walk away.
Try and get a club room, free cocktails and canopes 6 till 8 every evening.
Someone mentioned that most Singaporeans are a little embarrassed about the Train to Malaysia, it does look a bit run down compared to the surrounding buildings in that area and the reason for this is it is owned and operated by the Malaysians therefore investment is minimal.
Singapore is a great city, very friendly people and very little crime.
