thoughts on the 159
Discussion
My 159 SW ti is just over a year old and I've only had two problems - the microswitch for the lights in the estate bit broke, and the driver's door needed re-aligned because it was closing too tight.
I've never owned a 156, but the 159 is pretty much accepted as a big step on from that generation of cars in terms of quality. Our 147 isn't miles different from a 156, and the difference between it and the 159 is night and day. As you'd expect, with the platform being ~10 years newer.
No idea what you can look at for discounts, I'm afraid.

I keep reading very negative things about these dpf jobbies. They seem to have a dramatic effect on mpg?
Are they really something to be bothered about?
They do affect the mpg, I don't think there's any question about it. I'm not sure how dramatic it is, because all the diesel 159s have one fitted so it's impossible to get a proper comparison. People mention the economy that the 1.9d 156 got with more or less the same engine, but the 159 is so much bigger that it doesn't really tell us anything. Are they really something to be bothered about?
Some people have problems with them clogging, forcing the engine into limp mode either until it sorts itself out or until the dealer forces a DPF regen. Touch wood, I've had no problem with mine.
I guess it's just a relatively new technology which will improve over time, but for the moment we have to suffer a bit to stop the exhaust killing kittens. And more importantly, not having big clouds of soot.

I have a 92,000 mile 1.9JtdM.
Faults - a water pump went at 40K miles and a tie rod needed replacing at 80k miles.
Otherwise, all is OK.
It is a very comfortable, swift-ish, well built car. On long sweeping corners it handles very well, but in tighter stuff it does struggle to hide its bulk.
As a motorway mile-muncher I think it is excellent. As a sports saloon, it isn't quite a 3-series, but it is a lot more convincing than an A4.
Now I've run it in, I'm going for a re-map next week.....

I have owned a 1.9 JTDM Lusso since August. Covered 8,000 miles.
Absolutely love it. Well built, comfortable, quiet and well specced. Agree that it can get a bit twitchy on the twisty stuff, but no more so than any other front wheel drive saloon I have driven.
Needless to say, drop dead gorgeous and so much more character than the usual default choices in this class.
Had it serviced last week. The Alfa specialist reckons that the 159 is hugely underrated. Suffers from the legacy of the early 156's (not the fine car that the 156 later evolved into).
