Tyres In Relation To Thunder Road, Pressures?
Discussion
As ive never used the car in any sort of high speed run im curious what pressure to start off with for Thunder Road?
Fronts are 245/35/19's and just had 255/35/19's fitted on the rear yesterday.
Had the fronts done at 36psi and the rears at 39psi, however the backs dont look that pumped up for some reason.
As my drive to Thunder road is going to be purely motorway and then high speed runs was thinking of setting them up before I leave at 38psi front and 41/42 psi on the rears.
Any suggestions as to what should go with?

Guys,
Basically you want to be running with a few PSI over normal, or as high as you can within the safety of your tyre. (max PSI will be marked on sidewall).
ie: VXR8 39PSI rear 36PSI front so I will run 42 - 40.
On the day if anyone that has a spare pump and/or pressure gauge can bring it you can have a play about.

Front tyres say max psi 40 and rears say 50 psi, different brands. Take it they wont get too hot at the high speeds we are talking about and cause any problems?

I would just leave them at normal pressure. The pressure will increase anyway when warm.
In fact...Ive done nearly 190mph on drag radials at 20psi before lol. Felt totally fine.
Thanks for that Stevie In fact...Ive done nearly 190mph on drag radials at 20psi before lol. Felt totally fine.

I was wondering about that. How did they do by comparison, any advantage???

Running at the higher pressures decreases rolling resistance, the heat that will build up in the tyre, but reduces grip and handling.
So, max pressure for top speed, but if you have handling difficulties at higher speeds - the GTS goes light at the front over 130 - then the higher pressures reduce grip and control.
My advice, don't run max pressures unless you know you car is stable at the high speeds - or if it's a bit wet!

But at Elvington where Ive used both 888's and the MT DR's back to back. Oddly, at the time I tried them, they nmade virtually no difference to 1/4 results. Terminal at the 1km at that event was slightly higher with the 888's though. That was 2008, and it was circa 183mph. This years was slower due to a strong headwind.
2007 I used DR's only and distance was 1mile and did a little over 190mph. Although that was with a dodgy used parts, dont care if it blows up 3 day old 5.7 lol
FT in 2008 was using 888's only and taller rear diff to try and hit the 200. Did 196 first run over their magic 7/8th mile, 2nd run was 198mph, 3rd and 4th had minor problems. 5th was the only quick run where they actually gave me a time slip, which was 192mph. Unfortunately it blew up before the line though lol
Surprisingly, the car has felt totally stable at all times. Although the bonnet does make an attempt to fly off at speed ! In 2006 when using some Nitto's at circa 15psi, the car was a little wobbly, but still fine.
Just dont go doing anything stupid like slamming the brakes at speed. There is plenty of room to let the car slow naturally to say just over 100, then apply the brakes. Or just apply them very gently.
But just be smooth with the driving. And stay straight. But if wind makes the car wander...let it go, dont fight it too much.
