Improving Piston Heads - Think Facebook
Discussion
PH Guy's,
Just a thought but you have a huge amount of active members on here. Perhaps it would be worthwhile to consider improving the Members/Profile area along the lines of Facebook?
E.g. the ability to post/link more photos, twitter style updates that 'mates' could see, etc...
The Profile area is greatly under-used and also now looking a little dated (great idea 10-15 years ago though).
I'm sure this would improve your Advertisers Apeal as well!
Just a thought.
Robin.

I think there's a danger here of devaluing a lot of what PH has tried to achieve by labelling it with modern terminology which oversimplifies.
When developing the user profiles, I was trying to create an environment in which you could keep tabs (follow) people of interest. The creation of rich user profiles packed with car related info was an exciting prospect that should be as fascinating to trawl through as any other part of the site - and indeed lead you all over the site as you dig deeper and deeper and take the many paths around.
Real world service histories (blogs) should be goldmines of info for enthusiasts along with the product reviews, members links/businesses. The event calendar is partially used and has parallels with Facebook etc.
The ability to browse discussions based on location (available if you put a postcode in your profile) probably has more potential as does the member map etc.
There are many parallels between PH and Facebook, blogs, etc. etc, PH has got many, many toys tucked away in various corners of the site and many of them have not been fully developed or exploited to the full potential.
I'd be wary of dismissing suggestions like the one made as in essence it's what's was on the agenda for years, albeit in a unique PH style and with cars at the very core of it.

Ah bingo, yes I wasn't suggesting replicating Facebook or Twitter (but it's hard to ignore their appeal) but to develop along the same lines but with heavy motoring related ideas. The Blogs/Auto Journals would be good one! When developing the user profiles, I was trying to create an environment in which you could keep tabs (follow) people of interest. A few that commented on this topic that Facebook would be a bad thing however it would be interesting to poll current PH members to see who actually uses Facebook, Twitter or the like.
I'm no expert but I'm guessing quite a few of us do (I don't 'twitter' but do use Facebook).
Anyhow, it's good to see Mr PH Ted's aware of where the online content is heading...
And to reverse quote Mr Ballantine "I'm in" (whatever you come up with Ted)

Following on from that, how can I make 'recommendations' and put 'links' on my profile?
I can't actually remember! One way is to log in to www.OilyPages.com and from there you can tick which links you recommend.
http://www.oilypages.com/login.asp
You can also submit a link from there and it will be associated with your profile when it's approved.
