Ive a damaged block and some spare pistons etc and am making a coffee table similar to the one in the above link.

Who would have a table like this in their house and what do you think its worth?

I'd have one of those in my lounge! Long and narrow though, not square. Whats's it worth? No idea. but i would not part with more than 200 quid. And it would have to look shiny as well biggrin

Oh and don't forget, you can use it to do some weight lifting. But you must be careful, when attempting to lift it.

Other then that, I would not mind one of those at home.

I'd go for one ...

... not sure whether my (female) housemate would appreciate it though. hehe

I'd have one. I did consider making it, but I figured an RV8 bloxk would be better and at the time I only had a Cologne V6 which is cast iron!

Amazing how many times this picture reappears wink

I've some pictures of the ones I did using capri parts somewhere, plus in my office I used to have two guest chairs made from the front leather recaros. Really easy to do if you have access to a huge sonic bath and aircraft paint pre facilities for the laquering.
You put thick felt ont he bottom to save the floor and notice the hot glue gun glue on the pistons to hold on the glass.

if you go the 'spares' bit in ikea they will give you some sticky rubber pad things that work well

I've seen this done before and they've been OK but personally, I think they lack a little creativity and imagination though using pistons as wine holders is a great idea providing you can get to the bottles easily enough.

If a client asked me to make an occasional piece using an engine block I'd probably look at doing the following.....

- Try to keep some of the periferals and innards if possible. Colour them to add some contrast to the aluminium. I'd use colours that may not necessarily be the same (i.e make the push rods blue for example). Don't leave nuts and bolt in unless necessary, they'll just be dust traps.
- Cut out as much of the block as possible to expose the inside without compromising the integrity of the block. To stop dust ingress and sharp edges, you could fill out the missing bits with clear acrylic or a liquid crystal resin.
- Mount the piece. English Oak's finished in Danish Oil gives a great contrast if you have a more traditionally decorated room or, for the contemporary feel go for something v.different such as black granite (or a new black recycled plastic I've used which looks like marble but has a softer sheen)
- Dont use a square piece of glass, at least go for something round or better still shaped, and definetly do NOT use hot melt glue! Sorry, it looks cheap. If you really want ot ramp it up, get an engraver to sandblast a exploded diagram of the engine itself, or better still a diagram of the inside of the engine bay itself, minus the engine.

But, hey, thats just my thoughts
