Fire Extinguisher Steam Engine Boiler

Hello,

I was waiting for a student today and looking at a Fire extinguisher that was 200psi. Could you use an old one as a Boiler,as in steam engine?

Dunno, wouldn't it have to be heat tested also?

I used a gas bottle on an old compressor as an expansion tank, not sure that helps though...

I could be wrong but don't fire extingushers have meltable plugs so that they will vent before exploding in a fire. Hence no it probebly wouldn't work.

Most co2 bottles are 200 bar not 200 psi so shoul holt steam pressure no problem.

Chubb's website says that their hydrospray bidies are steel as are their valves, so they should be okay for temperature. Don't know what sort of erosion problems you'd get and something that big would require some kind of fire tube arrangement.

Fancy being blown off the footplate by scalding steam at 300psi at 70mph, hmm let me think.

Drivers used to screw down the safety valves so they could climb steeper gradients or carry a heavier load.

Same basic principles apply to any steam boiler. In fact if you PM me your name/address I'll lend you my copy.

Yes and No

The yes is it will happily contain the pressure

The No is it will be a really crap boiler as you will have minimal heat transfer as there will be no fire tubes

Boilers IIRC must pass a test. I remember this from a Fred Dibnah programme.

I doubt your fire extinguisher would ever pass.
