I have a Canon 300D with a neat little infra red remote control. A friend has asked me to source a compact camera with the same functionality.

Are there any compact cameras with remote control capability? I've had a look around and can't find anything so far...

Ixus wireless had it, but that's quite old hat now being a wireless version of the Ixus 50.

Interesting. My first digital compact was an Olympus Mju300 which came with a remote control (wireless shutter release) as standard - so I just rather assumed that many of them did. Seems not - you have to use the self-timer instead.

If you're not craving new technology then a Mju300 is now about £28 on eBay, and its 4Mp cousin the Mju400 probably under £50.

Yup, I had the Mju400 a little while back - may have only been 4mp, but really did take some fantastic pictures (colours, vividity, etc.) during daylight - was a little more tricky to get them looking good at night though. And also, not recommended for video use as very low res. and no sound.

But yes, it did have a remote..!

Hmmm... I think he's after a new one really. Is this the best the PH massive can come up with? I must admit, I couldn't find anything in my brief search.

The RC5 remote does work with some ixus models, but the page I found was americanised and I'm afraid I just wasn't interested enough to translate.

A quick google on the RC5 should sort you out though.

Now you mention it ... remotes (Infra red types) seem to have become a rare option in the last three years or so. I got one with a used Canon Pro1 I bought a few years ago but have never used it.

Mrs. LQ had one on an Olympus 35mm AZ200 a couple of decades ago - but we never used that either, other than to see if it worked. Batteries 9rechargeable form the camera in the little fit-in RDC unit) went utterly flat after about 5 years and could never find a replacement. Then realised it hardly mattered since we had never used it.

There are 3rd party products that can be used to RC some 'bridge' cameras and SLRs if the manufacturer has nothing or wants silly money. However the 3rd Party stuff is none too cheap either.

There are some apps for iPhones and similar but afaik mostly for more recent releases of SLRs.

Could be other options but just at the moment none spring to mind.

If your friend is OK with tethered remote control via a computer and a USB cable (PC mainly but somoe Mac) there are options for most styles of camera and both manufacturers and third arties offer control software at various levels. A quick browse of the Breeze Systems web site (www.breezesys.com) will uncover a list of Canon and Nikon cameras that offer comprehensive control options from a connected computer.

HTH.
