There we were on Sunday night discussing the relative merits of speed cameras and what I thought was an interesting concept was tabled.
Keep the current crop of speed cameras but colour code them as to severity.
For example a Violet speed camera placed on a straight bit of A road would attract say a £30 fine and no points because, lets face it, you should have had your eyes open and seen the thing but you werent causing what could be considered an extreme hazard. Its a reminder to the driver that they need to be more aware but not an indelible record of judgement or lack of it. Government still gets the money, drivers dont get victimised.
The severity of the punishment would then be increased as you moved through the rainbow based on the siting of the camera and the hazards around up to a limit of say £100 fine and 4 points for a Red camera outside a school the thinking here being that there is absolutely a risk so you should be endorsed.
