You know that nice aroma of coffee you get when you open a new jar of decent instant coffee?

I met a fragrances chemist at the weekend and he said his company makes the 'coffee smell' that's sprayed inside the lid...

I'll have to turn my cynicism up another notch...

I never understood why they do that either. You are getting the same aroma when you break the foil seal.

Still, when instant coffee is made one of the last steps is to spray some of the extracted aromas and flavours back onto the now soluble granules.

They do the same thing with wine - especially white. Its called "innoculation" I believe.

Open a bottle of white, pour a glass & smell it. Then leave it & come back & smell it again 15 minutes later....you'll know soon enough if you've been "had". hehe

Actually I think he meant the underneath of the foil seal, not the lid - my mistake.

One of the manufacturing managers at a previous coffee-producing client told me that some companies sprayed under the lid. There is definitely aroma and flavour sprayed onto the granules. Maybe they do both! I checked a few weeks ago with a Kenco and there was no smell under the lid on that one.

I love that smell.

There are a lot of things that 'over-promise and under-deliver' aroma-wise though. Toast and bacon are two. They smell awesome and taste good - but not as good as they smell.

I suggested that maybe we should just buy his coffee-chemical and not bother with the granules!!

I get the genuine waft everyday when I get into work to find the perculator just finished with a fresh jug of real stuff. The office smells nice for the rest of the day and does a sterling job of masking my farts.

I made the mistake of sticking the coffee machine on one morning. I work from home, and live on my own. Throughout the course of the day, I managed to drink the whole jug.

I didn't sleep very well that night, and I had odd twitches for a few days. Lovely coffee though. biggrin

Is it unusual to drink a full jug of coffee in a day?

It's a big jug. And strong coffee. I definitely wasn't 'right' for a day or two.

Interesting thread.

Are there any threads covering the various virtues or otherwise of different brands of instant coffee?

I suspect you may already have searched for them! FWIW my usuals are either Kenco Really Rich or Douwe Egberts (even if their marketing manager in 1988 was a git)

Tried a fancy Gaggia jobbie once but it quickly became clear that I'd spend more time cleaning it out than it would spend making coffee, so sold it.

I'd agree with that totally. I also quite like Cart Noir.

A jugs normally 5 or 6 mugs right?

4 or 5 mugs of generously measured 5 or 6 strength filter coffee is quite typical f'me...smile

I did once drink about 5 mugs, basically the whole jug, in the space of an hour though, then went to the cinema with a friend. I sat there shaking...
