Recommend me a PC game

Sat at home bored waiting to to hear back about jobs, so thinking it might be time to get a new computer game. I don't like first person shooters, which tends to rule out about 90% of current games, I prefer a bit of strategy. Favorite games are the Civ series, X2/X3, or going a bit futher back Tie Fighter. Any suggestions that I might like?

PC is a single core Athlon 3500+, 2GB RAM and a GForce 7600GS, so not a top spec gaming machine which may preclude quite a few recent releases.

Age of Empires or Command and Conquer games should run OK on your machine.

Try Sins of a Solar Empire.

You might need to dial the graphics down a little bit but that's ok as most of the time it's played zoomed out in a tactical view anyway.

It's one of my favourite RTS games of all time (ranks alongside Supreme Commander for sheer fun and scale).

Warzone 2100 is a good strategy/RTS game

you can download it for free , its a very good game IMO with lots of different defensive buildings and vehicles which you have to design yourself by researching artefacts. 100 missions to so it will keep you going

Medieval2 or rome are probably best to start.

Played Sins of a Solar Empire already, can't see to remember much about it though so probably worth another play.

Used to play the original age of empires against my housemate, didn't really like the latest one that much, can't remember why though.

Loved one of the earlier Command and Conquer's, but again not so impressed with one of the later ones I tried, think I preferred the older one using units that made sense to me, while the newer one was was all futuristic units wuth weird abilities.

I think my favorite of the resource/build/fight type games were the Stronghold series.

Not heard of warzone, that looks well worth a try.

Think I got put off one of the early Total War ones by try to play it on a previous incarnation of my PC that wasn't fast enough. Looks like there's a donwloadable demo so I might give that a try.

Adagio for strings came up on the iPod today, maybe that's a sign I should load up Homeworld again

Slight tangent but what about Eve Online? It's graphics aren't too heavy for what they are and it can make a great tactical Space-based game. (It is MMO though so not sure if that's a turn off?)

Been there, done that, vowed never to touch a MMOG again. Loved the game but it took over my life. I got so addicted I was getting up early to check on a few things and swap training around before going to real life work, spending far too long at work reading the forums and fiddling with my spreadsheets (I was the manufacturing manager for a corp making haulers in the very early days of Eve, and in RL doing a fill in IT support job that meant sitting around spending most of the day bored), and then rush home and play until late in to the night. Well I say played, I probably spend half my time co-ordinating stuff outside the game, I was basically running a small business and working harder in the game was I was in real life.

Then I went away for a week over Christmas and after a few days of withdrawall I realised I could live without it

Think that's one of the reasons I loved X3, very similar game but you can save it and walk away.

If your buying - perhaps Red Alert 3? Batman Arkham Asylum isnt a straight forward FPS and worth a look.

Absolutely not. Have you played it? I don't mean that in an arsey way, but I think it's a fantastic game. Sure it has FPS elements, but a great story and so much more than just shooty shooty.

Absolutely not. Have you played it? I don't mean that in an arsey way, but I think it's a fantastic game. Sure it has FPS elements, but a great story and so much more than just shooty shooty.

Yes mate, i've played the arse off of it and I most definately would put it into the FPS basket before anything else. Granted it's alot more open worldly than your usual FPS, but it's still an FPS, just as Oblivion is and Morrowind before that albeit with swords and magic.

The original dawn of war series were excellent, you can probably pick up the anthology set (main game plus 3 add-ons) for £15 now, good graphics, story line and wont be too resource hungry for your spec!
