I have just re -insured my Chim with Haggerty, but did try and haggle the price down a bit first , as it had gone up a fair bit since last year.(didnt budge other than discount for being TVR club memeber)

I was told that they had just been informed by their underwriters that they could no longer insure vehicles with modifications !

They honoured the offer they had already made me (pre being notified), but I will have to shop around next year.

Just a warning to anybody not to leave it until the last minute if you intend re-insuring with Haggerty and have mods as you may have to shop elsewhere.

Now, you see, I just dont get this.

If you bolt a turbo on your shopping car and give it 500 horses I can understand, but if you upgrade the suspension on your sports car (technically a modification) making the car handle better, and hopefully safer, why should you be penalised with it? Changed your crappy wheels for some better (IYHO) looking ones, why should that be classed as a mod? I mean, theyre both round (hopefully) and got rubber on the outside.

Geez ranting

I can see them losing a whole lot of business if stuff like suspension upgrades counts as modification! Surely all the classics out there (certainly almost all TVRs) are non 'standard' in some way, be it suspension, brake upgrades etc.

AFAIK 'mods' include any engine work, suspension, bodywork and for sure even changing one spec of wheel to another. I know because I had to inform my insurers that my Cerb no longer had the old original fitment wheels and instead had the new standard wheel on it (RLs to Spiders)

Well that's me done then!! Looks like Richard Eggar will be picking up my TVR as well as the Lotus!

Yep, that's them done with TVR's then.

Can you actually buy "Standard" TVR suspension anymore?

I`m due to re-insure with Hagerty, they have sent me my renewal notice through. My car is fitted with aftermarket wheels & they know about this `mod`.Has anyone had a competitive quote from anywhere else recently?I contacted Adrian Flux, their quote was more expensive, they said they would get back to me on it but didn`t.

I would be surprised if suspension or anything else that improves safety is counted as a mod? Best thing to do is ring them, they are great and very easy to deal with.

As has been said, this pretty much puts them out of the TVR market doesn't it?

Be prepared to be surprised then!

Haggerty's attitude towards TVR owners stinks. I'd boycott them personally.

It's not just mods. We got our Chim 400 when I was 24 and the missus was 22, both insured on the car, and have enjoyed two claim/drama free years with it. Go to reinsure recently with Hagerty....'sorry sir, we no longer insure anyone under 30 on a TVR!'

Shame, because I'd previously been happy with the service and premium. Shame they treat you as a statistic, your past history being irrelevant to them.

We did manage to find another good quote after a bit of painful searching, although I find it bizzare how company won't insure you on a TVR that is realistically not alot faster than the average modern hot hatch, yet will cover 20 yr olds with points on 500bhp Evos!

Anyway, I don't want an Evo, I want the Tiv and will take out the new policy elsewhere as soon as it's back on the road after the winter. Balls to ya Hagerty, I'm 26 and know how to drive my car without crashing! rolleyes

Seeings as no one is able to produce a list of "standard" parts for almost any TVR..... things like suspension, wheel mods etc can hardly be argued... just say they were standard factory items... whos to know

It's also possible to buy a car that's had some sensible mods done in the past without knowing that they're not 'standard' so to speak. Bushes, shocks, springs, even brakes to a certain degree. scratchchin

P.S. I was with Hagerty for two years & found them great. Remarkably good in fact. yes Only reason I went to Flux is because I wanted to use the car as my daily driver & they put commuting on the policy for me @ £50 more.

I know they changed their age policy recently but understood that if you were an existing customer and were re-newing then you were OK? Worked with me at any rate....

It doesn't seem so long ago that everyone was raving about how brilliant and cheap Haggarty were. Is this recent policy decision a reaction to something?

Yep same here. I've been with Hagerty's for 4 years and they said it was fine, even though my policy had lapsed. Richard Eggar or MSM me thinks.

they are cheap because the only insure people over 30y.o., don't insure for commuting and now the mods thing.
