Can anyone recommend any garden planning software, preferably one that does 3d as we're on a slope?

Sketchup not only does 3D and has lots of tree and related models, it can also get the terrain from Google Earth, and use ariel photographs to put the right textures on the surface. So you can do your model and get some idea of what the view will be like between the trees.

I think Tuna may be onto something, and you might consider spending your money in a different direction - on books.

Alan Titchmarsh did a lot on tis - I think it may be his "How To Be A Gardener" book. Also, frustratingly for you, Joe Swift did a design project in the current series of Gardeners World. He is a designer by trade and I think he has a book on the subject. I would certainly search Amazon for titles, and perhaps preview at your local WH Smith library. Both writers are good on the practical side (rather than fancy, impractical ideas) and very likely to give you the framework on which to develop your ideas - making the most of your sunlight, managing slopes, etc.

Thanks Guys! Sketchup looks pretty good, I'll give that a go.
