sl 55 amg with or without warranty?

Sorry to start another thread..
I think i want to take the plunge for one but...
I want a warranty given the amount of horror stories around electrics etc...
I called Merc today and they said they cannot sell a warranty on a used car?
Is that true??
What are the other options? Cost involved??

Only ever buy a SL with a Dealer warranty !!!
They go wrong and are very expensive to put right. l bought my SL55 last November and to date have had £8k worth of warranty work done with an ongoing issue still not sorted.
l considered buying one privately, or from a non MB specialist, but am eternally grateful l purchased from a MB Dealer.

I agree that a warranty gives piece of mind and is a good thing in general. I purchased my SL from a franchised dealer , the car came with 12 months renewable warranty which after consideration I allowed to lapse.Since then the only requirement has been a new charge pump. There are after market independents who offer warranties as I am sure you are aware.Whether they are any value is another question !I think i want to take the plunge for one but...

( as an aside I recall from my Ferrari owning days ( 360) , the older the car became the less the warranty covered and the more expensive it became)
I bought from non-main dealer with a third party warranty.
Whilst this won't give you the same level of comfort as a merc warranty, it will give you some peace of mind, only issue I've had so far in just over a year was the cooling pump issue that a lot of cars seem to suffer with the supercharger, not a massive job and warranty covered it.

Alex, which warranty did you buy and how much. I am close to buying a car. So i would like to know.

Tandem pump £1100
Tyre Pressure Monitor x2 (approx £180)
Tyre Pressure Module (approx £320)
All the work done by autoclass in Milton Keynes. Mercedes wanted almost £1700 to change the tandem pump.
I've just put a pot of money to
one side because my father is very knowledgeable about electronics and mercedes cars in particular!

I have a 2004 with an after market warranty that the dealer supplied. In the last 12 months I have had over £4k worth of work that Auto Protect accepted. I currently have the dreaded lose baffle in the fuel tank that is not being accepted and the cost to replace the tank is over £2k. Needless to say I have taken this up directly with MB as i think it is unacceptable for a fuel tank to have an issue like this. Not sure if I will get anything but I am pushing hard and willing to take it as far as I can!
I am not sure if Auto Protect sell directly to the end consumer however, but worth looking into as they have been very good.

You can purchase a MB warranty regardless of where you bought it so long as they carry out an inspection first. i looked into this with mine and actually had the inspection done but didn't take them up on it as i sold it after 10 months. cannot remember if there is a mileage limit though.
