Quite common to use old oil tankers as the hulls for FPSO's of course.

Yes I can 'picture' it in my mind was on the cover of a book....

no sorry can't find the Picture, it was a Book called "Construction Vessels of the world" - not sure which issue but probably from around 2003.
Anyway yes, the idea was to buy two old Oil Tankers (sister vessels) nail them together to make a Catamaran hull as sort of Fork lift truck of the seas using the Ballast to lift / lower.

Did some work on the latching mechanism for the topsides (from memory), but it never got anywhere.

Delta will be gone by the end of 2014. Well, the topsides anyway! Not much chance of shifting that GBS...



Alpha, Bravo & Charlie by the end of the next decade probably.

Definitely not piece-small. I can't say who but we have 5 contractors in at the moment discussing options. Some are reverse-install. Some are, believe it or not, serious about a single lift.

That topside is 23,500 tonnes. Charlie is much bigger!

currently a mechanical design engineer - steelmaking equipment for rolling mills.

previously process engineer in a steel mill and design engineer in process technology.

degree qualified as aero eng. so used to change!

i can do anything that interests me, but the bulk of my experience is 2D/3D design, FEA and project management. i like innovative solutions and sideways thinking. i like a mix of office based design and site based work. repetition and boredom is what lead me to leave my current role.

i'm considering applying to grad. schemes [have applied to baker hughes for their entry level field eng. positions] but feel i may be overlooked as i graduated 6yrs ago. at the same time i feel i don't have the experience for direct entry. i'm more than willing to relocate and start at the bottom, but this kind of thing fascinates me and would be worth it long term.

i have a CV ready to go if you wouldn't mind looking it over and giving me a few pointers?

Where do you work? Siemens/VAI, or perhaps Davy Markham? Done a load of work with both when I was a structural design engineer at Forgemasters (although mostly offshore castings). Still do some stuff with them both on a consultancy basis actually.
