A man has been jailed for 18 months for allowing a three-year-old child to smoke.
Newcastle Crown Court heard that the girl asked Graeme Conroy, 31, for a cigarette and when she started smoking it was filmed on a mobile phone.
The court heard that the child had smoked three cigarettes before the filming took place.
Conroy, from Ashington, Northumberland, pleaded guilty to causing unnecessary suffering or injury to health.

I can't get my head around this. I could walk out my front door right now, pick someone at random and kick seven shades of s
t out of them and probably get off with less than this chap.
Not excusing his actions, but we do seem to have one seriously f
ked up "justice" system in this country.

Cruelty to a child and he gets just 18 months?
The question you have to ask is why the other offences are punished so lightly not why is this one punished harshly.
There could be all kinds of factors, his previous, his relationship to the child, his likelihood to re-offend and that child cruelty offences will rightfully carry harsher weighting than burglary as would a GBH offence because a person is injured. In this case one who is completely at the mercy of the offender.

Why don't the parents of obese children also get prison time?
I know which kills more.
Deiberate harm like this is quite clear. I do believe however it not unheard of for parents of such children to be looked at for neglect / lose the kids. I know which kills more.
I think this chaps actions show a complete disregard for the child and a willingness to do anything for a cheap laugh? What next?
As I said you don't know what else they had on him.

Because they couldn't inhale the smoke, they'd cough their poor little lungs out.
You have to work at smokin
Edited to add, unless it's was a silk cut ultra
No why is it an over reaction to child cruelty and abuse of a position of trust? You have to work at smokin

Its symbolic of his total disregard to that child and its welfare IMHO.
Having dealt with child abuse cases and child neglect cases as well as one or two child deaths due to actions/neglect I probably have a bias view on the matter.

driving through a puddle?!
if he sat there and made the child smoke ev cigarette completly then he deserves his punishment. If the child had one puff is it any worse than the millions of people who might give their child a bit of alchohol in jest? he was a t
t and deserves punishment but 18 months seems a lot not to mention the huge cost
