might seem a stupid question but is a throttle butterfly round?

I can't see how it works if it is surely it must be oval in shape.

Why would round not work?

They look round to me.

I know what you mean, but what you have to remember is that there still has to be a tiny gap at the edges to let some fuel through when on idle. The butterflys are at a slight angle thus making a small space either side if they were completely round, and the same diameter as the cylinder that they sit in.

However, due to the angle it is feasible that they could be slightly oval. I suppose on reflection, if the angle of the butterfly was greater then they would have to be oval, but I'm unsure if there's any benefit to this.

Need an expert who actually knows for sure.

oval, with a chamfered edge.

Edited to say, no expert but happen to have one almost to hand.
