A friend of mine would like to buy a Canon PowerShot A640, mainly because its LCD screen can flip around and its angle can be varied.

Does anyone own this camera? If so, would you recommend it?

I've read a couple of reviews about it and according to those it sounds like a good little gadget.

Also, where could they get it from for a reasonable price, either used or new?

Yep. I bought it a couple of years ago for the flip screen, the full manual modes, the viewfinder (for when it's too sunny to use the screen) and the excellent reviews.

Always been 100% happy with it, even though I mainly use my SLR these days.

Get one thumbup!

I've had the A640 for a good few years now and think it's a fantastic camera. The best feature for me is the flip out screen which makes taking unusual angled shots really easy. It's starting to show its age a bit now with some bits not always working first time but then it has had a lot of use on many a holiday. Unfortunately so few cameras have the flip out screen that I'm not sure what to go for next. I'd love an SLR but the size puts me off and don't really want anything bigger than the Canon so will probably hang onto this until it finally bites the dust.

I think it'll have to be used - that camera was replaced by the A650IS over two years ago and even the A650IS has been discontinued now (without a replacement I think).

Thanks for the responses! smile

Quite agree, unfortunately there's not much choice for people who want a flip-out LCD screen. The only other one I found, apart from the A650IS is the G11, which is another great camera, the only downside is its price...

Wow, that's interesting, I haven't seen that before. It certainly opens up the possibilities, but it will have to be put to the test first. Cheers Reg!

Does anyone have it I wonder??
