It certainly used to work for my ex who collected autographs from almost the entire grid in 2001 just by writing a nice letter to each of the teams with an SAE. Ferrari, contrary to expectations, were actually the best in terms of response given that she received back signed photographs from MS, RB and JT, under cover of a letter signed by Mr Death himself.

Yes they have been checked by someone who knows what they are looking for and have been, so far as is possible without having stood over them whilst they did it, confirmed to be original signatures, not just the usual pre-printed you usually get.
