Selling advice

Hi guys,

Just looking for some advice here, I have decided to sell the griff, and am looking for some advice as to how and where to sell her.

I tried piston heads recently, but unfortunately did not get a single enquiry. Does anyone have any other suggestions?

Will probably hold off until spring now, but I want to get a head start.

I know the comments will come back about the selling prices being wrong, but I have spent over £26,000 on the car Inc the purchase price, so I am not prepared to give her away!

I think you need to wait unless you've got to sell, as it's the wrong time of year for really good prices and people are still unsure about the more important things in life especially if you were wanting top dollar....

I hope you weren't expecting your money back when you were doing the work though 'cos that's unlikely to happen for a long time.. if ever.

As I said, I think i will wait until next spring, am lucky enough to not have to sell, I just feel that I have gone as far with her as I can, and I don't get enough time to drive the griff!

I never expected to get all my money back, it wasn't why I did it. I was going to get around £17,500?

Looking through the classifieds, there are quite a few high value, top condition griffs for sale just now.

Not tried to sell the Griff yet but back when I had the V8s I used to go to a local Classic & sports car show, not to exhibit but to look round. I figured out that if you turned up in something interesting they let you in without paying and parked you on the showground. Took the S there three years running and without any hint of saying it was for sale got people wanting to buy it every time. Mostly from people that were exhibiting and wanted to change their toy for something else. It was a very nice example so that may have helped. Suppose what I am saying is you need to go where your target audience is.

All depends on condition of yours. £17.5K does sound high for a '96 car even in perfect condition privately.

I bought a one owner 17K mile '99 car with no chassis rust whatsoever from a top dealer with a good warranty for only a little more than you were asking. That was before the recession hit too.

There have been a few £20K+ cars but all have been late cars, mostly SE's with very low mileage and from dealers. I'm sure most actually went for less than asking price too.

Personally I've found PH and Autotrader the best for selling once you get the price right. I've had occasions when I've been asking just too much to sell, but reducing the price by a little as £500 made all the difference. Pictures of the inside and engine really help too if they are pristine.

Hi Guys,

Thanks for the tips so far, I am trying to be realistic about the price of the car, but it is so difficult to determine the correct price for the car, I guess the old adage or ' something is worth as much as someone is willing to pay for it' is very true.

Still in the last 12 months it has had the following done to it:

Red Glow pearl paint PAS
Complete, professional, bare body respray and colour change in show standard Red Glow Pearl paint by Surface and Design in Blackpool (pictures of work from start to finish)
New interior upgrade including complete new carpets, trimmed in cream leather, new mats, new centre tunnel, new sun visors, new hoop re-trim, all completed by D & C trim, Blackpool.
Completely re-trimmed roof, removable panel and folding targa section, including new rear screen.
Professional conversion to two part roof by Surface and Design including seals, locating studs and fibreglass lapped edges.
All roof sections trimmed inside in cream leather as rare option.
Tuscan seats to replace original (which I still have and can be included in the sale if required)completely re-trimmed by D & C trim in cream leather with red stitching.
Mechanical upgrades completed by Track V Road include:
Full TVR service New Gaz adjustable suspension all round.
New manifold gaskets,
New rear wheel bearings
New lower front wishbones
New aluminium radiator Wax oiled chassis
New front brake pads Recondition rear diff bushes
Upgrades include: 73mm inlet plenum ACT 45mm carbon trumpet base 45mm inlet manifold ACT silicon hose kit Stainless steel water pipe kit Induction kit and filter
New rear Toyos
Other extras include: Pioneer AVIC head unit with pop up full screen display, sat nav, DVD player and 6 disc boot mounted changer Modwise boot release kit Modwise electric window kit
Full leven interior upgrades Gold Leven badges
Full history from recognized TVR dealers from new Taxed and tested All original engine parts, seats etc are stored separately and available with the car.

Any advice about selling prices would be much appreciated.

Thats gorgeous, I think with that spec and what you have had done to it your car is worth every penny of £17.5K at least!, remember, with TVRs price is down to condition and mileage not just age and we should be talking the value of our cars up not down. Your car is worth what someone is prepared to pay for and if someone is looking for an exceptional car in your colour then you could well see more money for it so don't start the price off too low, go higher you can always reduce it, plus you will attract a more discerning buyer thats looking for a car as good as yours not someone who is buying to a budget.

A stunning car! I agree with the suggestion of showing the car at some classic shows in the spring. I don't think it will be long before you are gently negotiating with a drop-jawed punter!

Lovely car and I agree that it's worth £17.5k. I think it's just a matter of waiting for someone for whom your car is just what they are looking for but I suspect that you will have to wait for 6 months to get that price.

The plan is to wait until spring 2010 to sell her, fortunately the griff is debt free and minimal running costs now, after all the work!

Apart from pistonheads, any other places you would reccomend avertising?

Will be in the tvrcc website, and i do go to a fair few shows, but I live in ne Scotland, so many buyers might be put off by the distance?

I'd try posting in Car & Classic as well, you can post for free and there seems to be a number of TVRs already so it should draw the right kind of buyer!
