Hi all,

I have an s type which has been laid up for a monh or so. When I go to start it it doesn't even fire! The engine turns over ok but it seems to have not fired once!

Yeah I probably should have said.

It's the 3.0 V6 SE from 2002, she was running fine when I laid her up. The battery is reading 9 volts which is bad, but I used a jump pack which had her turning over a treat but not even a cough.

A neighbour of mine came over and bought his jump pack and when I was turning it over it was beeping at him. This allegedly meant that the leads were mixed up but this wasn't the case. We even disconnected the battery and hooked it up in case the battery was shorted but it was still beeping (it turned over fine though!) it's disapproval.

I'm totally puzzled and have had to pull me ebay ad so I can rectify this before I try to sell it again.

Yeah that was the first thing I thought of, I put another £5 worth into the tank just to be sure. It was super low when I parked up and the driveway faces downhill, but surely with the extra fuel in it now I'm pretty sure it as enough. I have also smelled the exhaust and can smell fuel so am assuming that it's pumping fuel just not sparking!

If you can smell fuel from the exhaust, it might now be flooded.

This might help;

Morning FC, bizarre. 3.0s are normally bullet proof, unless you have issues with either imobilser or harness. Are you being totally frank about your problem, or is it a long term thing?
The vehicle needs to be put on bespoke diagnostics to identify the root cause.
The factory did have issues with harness`s both inside the engine bay and the the main frame. 2004 on I think, affecting the alarm system.

Hi,
Yep, totally honest. I've not had a problem with the car before. I've had the battery on charge all day yesterday and it's back on today. Gonna try the flooded start up detailed in the link above a bit later. Hopefully that'll sort it! I don't want (nor can I afford to) have people looking at it. If I can't fix it I'll have to break it.

DON'T give up like that.

Where are you in the South East?

I'm sure that some good Indypendants will have a look at it for you and help get you going

Yeah unless your indy is going to fix it for four pounds then I can't afford it. I literally need the money from selling the car to survive.

I can understand but would a runner be worth a lot more that a non-runner

You can always ask if it's going to be an easy fix, if not then walk away.

Sorry to ghost this thread yesterday!
Yeah I appreciate that however I am totally skint (the four pounds I mentioned is all I have in the world!) and as such don't even have twenty quid to pay a garage to even look at it!

Yesterday I took the freshly charged battery and tried the first part of the flooded start out. Cranking the motor over with the throttle flat out then modulate between 90 and 100%

It did fart once! So I am assuming that the plugs need to come out as it is sopping in there, coupled with the oil down the bores and dry plugs should sort it out. Sadly an unscheduled visit from a friend of mine scuppered this yesterday and the rain coupled with my mum going in for more treatment scuppered today! So tomorrow hopefully I will sort it out.

Update,

Got to one of the plugs today, took it out, dry as a bone!

Tried starting, not a sausage!

Now, when I parked up I had probably 5 miles left on the range meter, when I tried starting it I put another £5 worth of fuel in. My driveway faces downhill is there any possibility that the fuel pump pickup is not hitting the fuel?

Its defiantly possible the fuels not being picked up,I have a steep drive, my car does it with over 1 gallon in there. I crank to the top of the drive on the starter, get over the hill and it fires up.

Engine not starting basics,
(1)Do you have a spark? (removed plug coil, have someone spin it over, look + listen for spark)
(2)Do you have fuel presure. IS the fuel pump running? (head under the car listen for it humming when ign turned on)
(3) Do you have injector pulse. (You probaly wont be able to test for 3 without special tools, but if you had fuel in the tank and the pump was running, you could pop the plug out again if its wet you know you have injector pulse)
(4) Do you have Compression (you can tell by ear, if when cranking it goes, cha..wa..wa..wa..wa..wa.wa wa, its got compression, if it goes, cha waaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaa it hasn't.

you wont be able to get all the plugs out the s-type without removing the inlet manifold, so just stick to the easy side.

IIRC there's a shrader valve (same as you have on a tyre) on the fuel line, push the middle in with a screw driver see if fuel come out.

Righty ho,

I've been busy with family commitments for a couple of days but got the chance to have another go today.

I poured another 5 litres of fuel in and tried to fire it up. It ran for one second and died, then never fired again.

I tried that schraeder valve and nothing came out at all, no hiss nothing.

I can hear a high pitched whine when the ignition is on (fuel pump??)

can't tell if the injectors are firing, plug was dry when removed after starting.

Frankly if there is a fault I can't affore to fix it so I'll have to break it. Things are getting desperate now and I can't afford to sell it broken.

You definitely have no fuel pressure. Now you've found the valve you can easily test for that as you try and remedy the situation.

Would be nice to know if there's a spark? but while there isnt any fuel, it not going to make any difference.

The wine you are hearing isn't the fuel pump, probably the motor for the throttle body.
You would only hear the fuel pump with your head near the tank, it would run for 2 or 3 secs every time you turn the ignition on, not continuously all the time the ign is on.

Personally before giving up, I'd bridge the fuel pump relay,(overrides the cars control of the pump turning it on all the time) then you should have fuel pressure. If it still doesn't go then, probably some kind of immobiliser issue, but if it was that you would see the red light flashing. Cant remember if its on top of the dash or down by the j gate.

If it runs when you bridge the fuel pump relay, there no alot of diag to do to find out why and fix it, if its an immobiliser fault, then its going to be complicated and costly so your are probably going to have to break it.
