The car is just about to get painted but at the moment im just trying to get the car to run properly.Carburettor has been rebuilt. The car does one of three things,it will either not fire up at all and just turn,or it will start and run sweet as a nut,or it will start, run great then degrade into rough up and down idling.Im starting to think something electrical. Can the TDC/crankshaft sensor do this?

Yes it did this before i rebuilt the carb.I took off the TDC sensor down at the flywheel and cleaned it today, the car now 'seems' to be starting all the time, but tomorrow's another day!Main problem seems to be the car is fine with choke, just when the chokes about all the way off the idle starts being erratic,up and down about 3 or 400 rpm,and eventually it will stall.Sometimes you can put the choke all the way off and it will idle really perfectly, even way under the recommended idle speed! Then after 5 minutes of perfect running it starts getting erratic again?

Does the 5 use the renix ignition module? Not sure but they are known to be troublesome and those symptoms fit very well with an 11 I had a while ago. A new module and sensor fixed it for £20 from the scapyard. Intermittent carb problems though not unknown are less common than intermittent elctrical gremlins.

Yes it does have the Renix module. For three days there it started and idled fine but yesterday went out and it wouldn't fire at all!Tested for a spark at the leads and i was only getting a spark from two leads? The leads were fine as i swapped them over but it seemed half of the distributor cap sockets weren't giving out a spark?Cap and rotor 'look' fine but i know this isn't a given,i've ordered new ones. What scrappy was that then you got the module?Must have been a while ago at £20!
