If Watch brands were Cars...
Discussion
Longines would probably be Daimler or perhaps Ford Era Jaguar- formerly magnificent manufacturer, now greatly reduced in splendor.
Tag Heuer could be Audi- once made rip-snorting racing clocks (and still do). Now make very fashionalble watches for the middle classes from a common parts bin.
Swatch- MX5?
I don't think there is a car equivelant of the real high-end stuff. Car's havent been so exclusive and painstakingly assembled in a long time. Perhaps ever.

hmm, interesting. Just been browsing this forum as I'm toying with the idea of a 'proper' watch after stumbling into the watch room at Harrods by mistake and spending rather too long there then I suspect was good for my wallet. Trying to build a picture of what a watch might say about the wearer but it's pretty hard as there's face value (pardon the pun) vs what those in the know, know. Ultimately neither matter as much as whether I felt the style was 'me', but useful to get a picture and you've got to learn taste from somewhere...
Rolex too 'obvious' somehow and not enough edge for me. Omega bit to common/brash, Breitling too 'busy', Most Tag's feel a bit too chunky. Raymond Weil or IWC or Jaeger seem more in the ball park.

Richard Mille - Pagani
I was thinking that to myself earlier!Jacob and Co - Steven Ireland's car collection.
Anyway I don't think this comparison can be made to work ... E.g. Is the engine equivalent to the movement? If so Pagani are 'Merc bodgers' and Ford are an in-house manufacture ...
And in any case Pagani=Greubel Forsey ...

Seiko monster = MX5
After all, they are both the default answer to just about any question on their respective subjects!
I see where you're coming from, but isnt the Monster a bit too masculine? After all, they are both the default answer to just about any question on their respective subjects!
Seiko 5 = Mx5
Adds gratuitous shot of decidedly non feminine Seiko 5 recently picked up off ebay for £12!!! (the strap cost more than the watch!)
Everyone's forgotten Jaeger LeCoultre? Tricky to classify, but I'd verge towards Lotus on the basis that JLC put all of their technical research into the movement and then offer up the finished pieces in steel cases so they're not hugely priced due to the additional cost of the gold / platinum / etc. JLC offer movement design and parts consultancy to other top firms (indeed Patek used JLC movements for 30 years at the beginning of the century), and Lotus likewise offer engineering services to other firms (including the very top marques, though they keep this *very* secret, whereas the lower brands like to advertise the association with Lotus).
For their type, both Lotus and JLC are relatively affordable and JLC are fairly short on frippery (discounting the 'joaillerie' range of course) and more about function.
That said, whereas you could stop a decent sample of Porsche drivers, record what watch they're wearing and get a statistically significant result (I bet Rolex come out on top - and I'm laughing at myself here as I used to wear an Explorer and a steel Daytona when I had my 993s)... I very much doubt that the same experiment performed on Lotus drivers would produce any significant watch bias. Lotus owners tend to be too individual for that, regardless of the level of groupthink on the Lotus forums / SELOC.
Can't think of any watch brand that goes better with Lotus though - the indie Germans just seem *wrong*

..I just dont want to go along with it! Of course the Seiko 5 range has many watches that arent feminine. The Monster is the easy answer to the 'What watch?' threads as it appeals to many (it looks decent quality and as said quite masculine), and is obviously a good watch yet the '5' range does basically the same job for less money.
Admittedly I'm still a bit disappointed that somebody likened Seiko to VW. The Lexus connection isnt a bad one, although if you were to go with that it might have to be Seiko = Toyota, 'Grand' Seiko = Lexus; which I'd not be happy with!
Breitling = Corvette?? No, again I disagree. They're both perhaps a bit crude, but atleast Corvettes are quite cheap
Apologies for the overly Seiko orientated post.
I likened Seiko to VW because in the grand scheme of things they are a slight tickle over affordable (affordable being what Joe Bloggs would spend on a watch), bombproof and classless.
I don't think the nationality of the the manufacturers should come into it.
Edited to add they both do a complete range, top to bottom too.
