Got in my 2002 clk this morning put it into revrse and it jolted back and did the same when i put it into drive now the engine diagnostic indicator on the dash is on and will not go off.

What is the problem and will it damage it to drive with the light on.

Sounds like the electric plate in the box / control module a common failure on C Classes, ideally you need to have the car scanned for gearbox fault codes (N71-control module) to verify but needs to be looked at ASAP it is usually caused by G/box oil getting into the electrics.

Can this be done at any garage or would it be best at MB dealership,

Any garage with diagnostic equipment and the relevant MB diagnostic software package can read the fault codes and reset so ideally an MB independent or MB themselves, as they will be able to interpret these codes into a repair, there are alot of variables and im only going on experience of the symptoms you give i hope this is of some help?? Paul

Got it checked and the fault was the battery it has been on the car since new 8 years old got a new battery fitted and with the diagnostic check £160.
Happy chappie again.
