Hi,

for some time my rear brakes have been crap, i even struggle to slow down on steep decents now, the reason for this is a accidently got WD40 on the disc about 6 months ago. I cleaned it off by its never got back to how it once was!

Any tips on cleaning the disc and the pads i guess, how about leaving them to soak in very hot water with washing up liquid in?

Or soaking in turps?

Thanks

HRG.

You need a solvent. Brake cleaner would be best, failing that something such as white spirit or petrol would do. Fairy liquid and washing powder might help, but won't be as good as a proper cleaner.

Pads are probably toast!

Clean the disc with sandpaper, and bin the pads.

I find car panel wipe works well for disks. If your pads are contaminated they are beyond repair unfortunately. Superstar components are very reasonable for padssmile

I had this recently. Took them to a bike shop who did their best, which wasn't tat great.

So I sprayed them with Auto Glym engine cleaner, and then rode it in heavy rain, they work a treat now.

Take the pads out and sand them down a bit with some sand paper, this'll help remove any glazing etc. Soak pads in petrol and torch them, clean the disc with brake cleaner (or any other solvent). Done this before and they ended up working fine once again.
