DVLA - number plate on retention

Evening all, I have a number plate on retention, renewal date up in a couple of weeks. Our fine postal service seems to be going on strike so what would happen if DVLA did not recieve the letter by the renewal date. Would I have lost the plate or is there any flexibility with DVLA does anyone know?

Maybe I should just use an alternative to royal mail.

You can apply up to 28 days in advance, and they are flexible as I've gone a fortnight over in the past

Last week I found the letter reminding me the retention period was up.......on the 16th July

I sent it back with a letter of apology and a cheque for £75 for three years

I'm pleased to say it came back this morning dated for renewal on 16th July 2013.
