I have a very nice 1985 635, Auto. I've just seen a M635 engine and manual gear box for sale local to me, complete with wiring etc, and I'm thinking about buying it and doing a conversion. Any one got any advice on what else needs to be changed. Obviously I'll need a peddle box, and a new diff as the manual has an overdrive top gear, will the E28 fit? I can get a prop shaft made up. Can I recalibrate the Speedo?
My concerns are. Are the shocks and springs upgraded? Are the Brakes Upgraded?
I'm not to bothered in having all the Highline interior as I have a very good leather recardo interior just the mechanicals

It can be done, but could be costly to do it properly.

Make sure the M635 engine you're buying has had new a timing chain, sprocket & tensioner before you fit it. Try and buy as many parts from the broken M635 as you can, or source a parts car for the prop, diff, wiring, instruments, suspension, brakes etc. as it will work out a lot cheaper. The suspension and brakes will need to be changed to M635 spec and will cost a small fortune if new parts are used. Many E28 mechanical parts can be used on an E24 as they share the same chassis so the pedal box might fit.

This smacks of a completely pointless, expensive, fraught-with-difficulty and ultimately counter-productive exercise to me.

If you have a genuinely nice 635CSi why 'bdise' it into something it isn't?

At best you'll expend a whole heap of anguish (and money) on achieving a car with 286 bhp (if you're lucky)in a car that was never an M635CSi to start with?

At the end of all of this you'll have a car that that no one will touch with a barge-pole, that doesn't even fall between two camps...In fact, it'll be between nobody's camp!

If 'speed' was your ultimate goal you may as well have bought an un-bastarised E36 M3 for a fraction of the price.

IMHO..a 635CSi is a 635CSi...an M635CSi is an M635CSi

Anything else makes no sense at any level to me.

Find a cheap manual E28 and stick em in that instead!

If you look at my profile, then you will see that cheap cars are not an option, BMW are rarehere, which is why I'm thinking about the conversion. I'd agree it would be pointless if in the UK, but there is (was) only one M635 in the ountry. any thing with an M engine is worth, 20K pounds, and the labour for the conversion is cheap.
And yes the 635 is somthing, it has never seen salt, and and I am the third owner.
