I'm rebuilding an old mountain bike I had lying around to be a sort of on-road training bike. Most of the components were pretty knackered and it had gripshift of which I am no longer much of a fan.

So trying to be a reasonably cheap set of components has been on my agenda for a few weeks but I'm struggling to find anywhere that sells a complete groupset for a reasonable price. Does anyone have any ideas of where I pick something up, or am I going to have to do it all piecemeal?

OOh, excellent, that's the kind of thing. Now where do I get one with V-brakes rather than discs?

I'm sure they would do you a decent deal on swapping to V's if you asked. Alternatively mix & match from them. For the road I used a single 39t chainset on the front with an 11-34t cassette - plenty of gear range and no need for front mech & changer.

With the money I saved I upgraded to an XT r/mech & cassette which saved even more weight.

If you're after cheap but dependable... it's all about Shimano Deore. Stunning value for money.

Be careful buying a full groupset... make sure front mech and bottom bracket are the right size.

Deore on ChainReaction. No groupsets, but pick and mix - http://www.chainreactioncycles.com/SearchResults.a...

Cheers Rico. No worries, I know about BBs and so on being sized correctly as I rebuilt my GT a couple of years ago, just no idea of where I got all the bits from.

Pick and mixing is a pain in the arse really, but I suppose I could if push came to shove.
