Panasonic had a demo theatre of a 103inch 3D plasma set-up in the Bull Ring Birmingham this weekend.

You has to wear special glasses that were synced with the plasma. The lenses flicker at a very high rate so you see 2 different camera angles from one screen. If you took the glasses off the image on the screen looked blurred.

They showed some F1 Toyota footage, skiing, Olympic games and a clip of a new James Cameron film.

It was very impressive and very effective - definitely going to be huge technology over the next couple of years. I will seriously consider buying a 3D plasma when I am due a new screen. The limiting factor will be the number of real films (as opposed to CGI/cartoon) made in the 3D. I think there may also be a problem with the size of the screen needed as I got the feeling that size would make a big difference.

The plasma could be use as normal when a 3D film is not being shown.

sounds a bit naff that you still require special glasses to view a 3D image.

I didn't think you needed a dedicated 3D TV for future 3D compatibility? I think this answer will undoubtedly make a huge difference to the take up of 3DTV technology as people are / have only just invested in HD tv's.

SKY Have been filming sport and a lot of other programs in 3D for a couple of years and will eventually roll out a 3D SKY box as a subscription service.

Let us know when you crack a cost effective holographic projection method wink

of course I don't have an alternative approach, if I did I wouldn't be posting on here hehe but I would have thought some kind of laser technology application might have appeared by now. It just seems so '1950s' to still have to wear 3D specs.

I think it's going to EITHER be:

1. Existing plasma / LCD TV's will be able to receive 3D via SKY or similar BUT you have to wear 3D glasses when watching 3D broadcast / channel

or

2. Buy a VEEERRRRRY expensive 3DTV + SKY or similar and no silly glasses.

in the future though ofcorse

The 3D specs are polarised so you do get a proper 3D picture and not the red/green of the old style. The pictures are actually pretty impressive and we have a demo set in work. Sky want a 3D channel on air next year and since the 3D programming can use the current broadcast chain and HD boxes, it isn't an outrageous target.

The only issue I can see with 3D is that a lot of people have been buying HD TVs recently and will not want to splash out another few grand on a new set for another couple of years.

Are there not Holographic tvs already?

I'm sure one of my colleagues has a client that writes the test programs for something like that?

I'll check it out

I undestand that Phillips had a 3D tv that did not require glasses but it made you feel sick and dizzy after 30 odd minutes and they have scrapped the idea it was also VERY expensive so take up would have been minimal.

The glasses are not cheap paper items they are of good solid design and you have to wear them for watching 3D there is no alternative.

3d tv will not be an instant hit ,It was 3-4 years before flat panel was accepted.
Much will depend on price, but when you next come to replace your tv you will certainly consider a 3D Plasma Panel.

We were by Selfridges and managed to convince the OH to go to that demo @ Bull Ring.

Wasn't expecting much, honestly thought it may have been another gimmick but was actually quite impressive. The trailer for Avatar was rubbish and i don't think had the same impact as the Bejing Olympics trailer. That was actually quire good, very impressed. Oh and the sound was rubbish though

I don't think alot of people would be put off with purchasing a new TV. After all, you have to keep up with the Jones' smile

If there's one close, i would recommend you going to get an idea of the tech. Those naff glasses won't last long. As soon as 3DTV's take off someone will design a trendy pair.
