Have a disco 300tdi now, looking to replace it was thinking later disco 300tdi as to be honest I don't really want a td5.

Is a towing workhorse for long distances, but also my daily.

Anwway given I really want a longer rear area- for sleeping in & disco is ok but not ideal as im a lanky bugger & thought the lwb panel van shape Defender would suit my needs v well- other then no a/c as an option.

Never driven a Defender , guessing is a lot more agricultural? have heard I may wish to change transfer box to a disco one for better motorway use- worth doing?

Sorry it's not exactly the question you asked, but have you considered a Toyota Landcruiser? Big, comfy and practically bulletproof.

Indeed I have, the 4.2 td jobbie seems a cracker & is on my list, purchace price a bit of a killer tho & not so many manuals & for sub 100k examples 20 yr old landcruiser is 10 yr old disco money.

I prefer landy parts prices too.

IIRC you're taller than me so the Defender will still be a bit tight. The load bed is pretty much exactly 6ft which is adequate but not comfy. You'll need to remove the bulkhead to get more legroom anyway but that won't make a huge difference to the length as there will be a bulkhead replacement bar in place instead... Then there's the question of insulation - an uninsulated landy gets colder than a tent.

How about a long wheelbase Rangey? IIRC the wheelbase is 108". Dunno what the diesel options ar though, they're probably all V8s

I've had a few Defenders and am 6'4". A 110 should be fine, if you get a van that has a bulkhead behind the seats you can get a bulkhead replacement bar which allows the seats to go back a bit further. It's also possible to get replacement seat rails that give a bit more legroom if you really need it (I didn't.)

As has been said, parts are cheap which is good but you'll need lots of em, which is not! Make sure 6the chassis is in decent nick, get it waxoiled and keep it waxoiled!

Cheers all.

Followed a few defenders I'd like but all went for a lot more then I thought,
an an example this diddnt meet reserve & fella wants 6k

or 7.5k for this with a few more miles-

Heck for same yr & miles can get 3 discos! are from 2k & can get a/c so I'm thinking disco again probabally makes the most sense for me.

Condition is far more important with landies than age, service history or mileage!

I've seen vehciles with fsh and low miles but completely shagged and examples which have been home serviced, high miles but tip-top because the owner has cared enough to look after it well. Never buy one without having a bloody good look over it!
