My sister has recently bought her first car a brand new Yaris TR 1.0, yes I know not a very Pistonheads car. However, she has received a letter from the garage advising her to have the oil changed at 1000 miles for a fee of £50. I'm somewwhat confused by this, why would the car need an oil change already? I have bought several news cars previously and they never needed an oil change in the first 10k let alone the first 1k.

Any thoughts at all?

Engine running in period.

Likely the engine currently has running in oil and not the proper semi-synth/fully synth oil it would normally run. Hopefully they'll change the oil filter at the same time (they should!!) so i presume it's oil and filter change. Not uncommon.

Having said that i've just had a quick look on the net and i can't find anything related to 1000 mile service or running-in period, and the service intervals look to be 10K miles.

No idea then, maybe they are taking the p155 and it's a £50 white elephant!!

pretty sure this is quite common (not sure about Toyotas specifically but needed this in a Saxo I had from new) and to be honest its not a bad idea.
£50 for an oil change seems pretty reasonable too for a dealer...

Sounds standard for a new car. As above, different oil used.

yep fairly standard - running in oil may be a different grade to the final stuff also it will allegedly have a lot of contaminants in it from the engine bedding in and you don't want those swilling around your engine for too long.

Sounds a load of bks to me.

Ive been selling new Toyotas for 5 years now, Ive never heard of this running in service!

The first service on ANY new Toyota is after 1yr or 10,000 miles, and even that is just an oil/filter change and a general check over.

Subaru have a 1000 mile first oil change, free labour, you pay for the oil IIRC.

Don't know about Toyota can't speak from experience, but its certainly not uncommon on other cars.

I own an Aygo, which has exactly the same engine as the new Yaris, and we're not due a service/oil change until 10,000 miles or one year.

Unless of course, the dealer has been informed from the factory that a bunch of cars have left the factory with the wrong grade of oil in them, and is issuing a recall. In that case, I'd expect the 1st oil change to be free of charge.

Cheers

Andy

Methinks you should find another Toyota dealership and ask them what the service intervals are on your car, and then ask them if it has to have a 1000 mile oil and filter change service from new. If they say no then the dealer you bought your car from are definately taking the p155 and you should tell them so, thereafter avoiding them like the plague in favour of another dealership that you may only have to travel a few extra miles for.

That kind of thing normally rings alarm bells with me and makes me question what their customer service is really like and are you going to get stiffed when something goes wrong that needs fixing under warranty or when it comes to service time are they going to do it properly??

Cowboys!! nono

I agree, it isn't uncommon, BUT on a Toyota it is not required. Sounds like they dealer is just trying it on with the whole 'we advise' thing.

Many thanks to you all for the replies, typically there is always a conflicting range of comments. I took the iberty of ringing a second Toyota garage whose service department had also never heard fo such a thing. Does sound indeed like they are trying it on, have advised my sister to ignore the letter and carry on enjoying her first car.

My thanks once again. smile
