Help required – re VW transmission.

I’m after a recommendation for a transmission for a Mk3 Golf track-day car I’m building.

The car. It’s a car specifically for track days and more specifically to lend/rent out for newbies without risking any of my other cars. I’ve chosen a Mk3 Golf mainly because I’ve just been given one, but it should be reasonable easy to build and reliable. Spec-wise, it’ll be gutted with safety gear and powered by a 12-valve VR6 engine. It will still be road-legal.

I need to choose a transmission and not being a VW expert, I’m getting baffled by the sheer amount of choice. Here are the requirements, can anyone recommend a type of gearbox that would suit ?

Must be five or six-speed
Must have a conventional clutch (not the flywheel-in-transmission type)
Must have hydraulic clutch

Preferably have a rod (not cable) change
Preferably be of a family which would allow me to change final drive ratio to one which more suits the power/aerodynamics that I’ve got. (i.e. max available speed in 4th to match max likely speed available on track to match max power revs)

Answers on a postcard please…….

Corrado G60 3 4 5 are pretty long gears so might allow a good speed in 4th. You'd want to add Corrado VR6 1 and 2 as they're too short on the G60. I'd guess they'd fit a golf pretty easilly.

VR6 box is fine except its waaay too long geared for track, popular final drive mods are- mk3 16v 3.68 V5 = 3.94
