Random USB problems

My home PC runs XP Pro. Occasionally when it boots up, the USB mouse doesn't work. It's an optical one and it glows red, so it's getting power, but I can't move the curser about - it's stuck in the middle.

I'd say about 9/10 times it works fine. Any ideas why?

Similar set up to mine. Not experiencing your type of problems though.

My cursor freezes or just disappears, and all the mouse lights are on!

So, I just replace the batteries and alls well.
