Can anyone recommend someone who can remove a stump from my garden? It's a chestnut tree, about 8" diameter and I've left five feet of trunk on for leverage. I've spent half a day on it and it just sits there laughing at me. Colchester/Ipswich area. Ta!

Why not do it yourself?

You could hire a stump grinder - gets it right down to below ground level. £85 a day...

or this one gets to a foot below ground...

http://www.diggaway.com/C500%20Stump%20Grinder.htm

or you could attack it with chemicals...etc

I see £107 + VAT... I think I'll bribe some strong friends instead.

I've put another hour in with sledgehammer, axe, wrecking bar, chainsaw, spade, pruning saw, loppers, secateurs and trowel. I think this bd is connected to Australia.

Had a cherry tree stump like that once. I ended up using a lorry strap out through the back gate connected to my Laguna. Thought I was going to burn the clutch out, but it worked. smile

See where you went wrong there is you need a company car for this sort of thing. Personal cars just can't take the abuse... wink

We just contacted a local tree surgen who did it for 30 quid on his way home.

I did that successfully with a Sorbus that was growing outside (a few runs with a BMW730i did the trick), but this is inside the garden so there's a brick wall between tree and road. Thing is, with effort you can cut the roots on the outside (as thick as your arm) but no way can you get to the ones inside the defensive perimeter.

I think I'll ring 617 Squadron nuts

That would be ideal; in fact I'm waiting for 2-3 calls to be returned.

OP, you have yourself a fun time ! thumbup

Will destroy the trunk, and go below the level of the lawn or whatever by a few inches - lots of lovely wood chip mulch for your borders.

obvuiously if you have the Ghey, you could yellow pages to get someone to bring one round and do it for you
Lets face it. There ain't a whole lot better than getting to use some dangerous power tools.

Even something as wussy as a shredder can supply a reasonably amount of entertainment.

Top of the heap is a big chainsaw. Now they're fantastic fun...

Dear Simpo Two,

5/10 try harder...
...I did a pine tree of similar girth and with hand tools only for real man points - felling & hand axes, bow and pruning saw, crowbar and sledgehammer.

You will make a chuffing big hole both in diameter and depth.
For the defensive perimeter you need to cut a length out of each large root (rather than just one cut per) so you can get inside.
Lastly you'll find just one root going straight down, this is the BUG3R.

Be prepared for a major tool sharpening excercise afterwards 'coz cutting earth really blunts a saw.

I would have used powertools if I had some!

Oh, and I remember the V8 saw from an earlier thread too, P&M, it was the obviously thorough involvement of H&S with regard to safety clothing and operating practices that I enjoyed. Risk assessment PAHsmile

regards,
Jet

ETA V8 memory and praactices, oops came over all Zummerset there

is there a small non-chain hire shop near you? if so give them a try and be prepared for a nice surprise price-wise, the family owned place near me usually comes out around 1/4 of the price of HSS.

Oh yes!

I'd stump grind it myself but if not saw, tirfor and a few hours would do.

Finally bribed an impoversished friend to lend a hand this afternoon... two hours later we had finally slain the beast, but I couldn't have done it single-handed. It was more like 14" wide at the bottom.

(And the chainsaw will be having a new blade as a reward - even sharpening it with a special Stihl file doesn't work any more)

Try lugging one of those through a woodland along with the rest of your kit!
