Floppy Gear Stick

Got a Rover gearbox in my Griff and the gearstick has gone floppy as if a spring or something has given up the ghost somewhere.
Am pretty sure I have read a thread on it before but search function seems to be out at the mo,any ideas would be much appreciated.
PS Is it likely to get worse?

Just looked at that and realised most of the pictures aren't there any more.
