I'm sure this has been discussed before, but i keep getting an error when i search the site.

My runflats are reaching the end of their life and i'm considering replacing them with the normal tyres. Is this a 'modification' in the eyes of the insurance company?

It would probably depend on your policy, but in my view you should tell them. Insurers would almost certainly use it as an excuse to avoid cover if you did not and if you then suffered an accident in which they could argue the tyres might have been a factor.

My advice where insurance is concerned is always simple: if in doubt, declare it.

Probably best to tell them but now that BMW fit non runflats to the 1, 3 and 5 series. not so important as it used to be perhaps.

I would probably tell them.

We wouldn't class it as a modification and therefore there would rightly be no premium increase.

Hopefully your insurance company will say the same.

I changed the Run-flat Tyres ( thats capital R, hyphen, small f, capital T according to BMW ) on my 135i after telling my insurance company. They said it was no problem at all. My local dealership even fitted them for me. They seemed keen to let me know that changing them wasn't a problem.
The reason I swapped them was for better ride quality, you'll find that because the sidewalls on standard tyres are less stiff, the ride is much more compliant. Potholes, speed humps and general road imperfections are soaked up in a smoother fashion.
