Is a moulded grape any health threat to the rest of the grapes on a bunch/branch (whatever its called) ??

Similar question ; is eating any fruit and finding that the middle is moulded a health risk?

Questions apply to not actually eating the mould on the fruit itself, but the proximity of the mould to the parts that you have eaten.

Basically I bought a bunch of grapes from a supermatket and after getting back into the office I notice that one in the middle basically looks like a condensed cobweb...in other words, moulded beyond recognition....but the rest of the grapes look to be ok, apart from one which the mould seems to have 'jumped' from the bad grape onto it.

heard a vicious rumour regarding oranges (so potentially a load of bks) that in packaged fruit it was not unusual to find one mouldy one as it somehow helps to ripen the remainder...................???????

It turns the others. So they will rot quicker.

but obviouslybefore un-ripe fruit rots, it goes ripe.. Hence what you heard.

hehe

That'll be a LMGTFY "fail", then.

Grapes have a natural bloom which is yeast anyway smile As for spoilage organisms on fruit, I don't think there's much to worry about, it'll just taste horrible so you won't eat them anyway. The blue mould on oranges is a Penicillin species so might even do you good! The nasty ones like Clostridium are anaerobic bacteria and prefer meat.

The world is full of 'opportunistic' pathogens which can't attack through skin, but can start their work if the skin is broken. So the mouldy grape or apple simply had a broken skin. Th eintact skin of the other fruits keeps them out (as does your skin).

Almost. It's not the rotting that makes the other fruits ripen, but the fact that ripe fruit gives off ethene which is a trigger. And of course ripe fruit has a thinner skin so is more prone to fungal attack - hence the ripe one rots first.

I have seen many grapes on the vine when I lived in Spain, and to be honest it was a rarity if there was not at least one horrible looking grape on every bunch even when they were growing.

LMGTFY would have given the answers to all your questions.

Google said, if you eat it it's not going to inflict any health risk to you.

Therefore we can assume that .

1. No its not a health thread
2. Finding the middle moulded isn't a health risk.
3. one can assume that if eating the moulded grape itself isn't a health risk then the surrounding parts aren't going to inflict any health risks either.

If you're ok to eat the moulded grape then all your other questions are covered by that statement wink
