Help needed. Just recently my 38000 mile S6 has developed a squealing noise from engine area. Only comes with the engine being warmed up....approx 15 miles. Goes when accelerating and starts when easing off the throttle. Its driving OK but took to AUDI boys locally and they are unsure. Also, it is only just out of warranty, being 3yrs $ months old. Will they give good will and fix for free. Thoughts/advice please. Thanks

If it's just out of warranty and dealer maintained then there will very likely be some goodwill involved - if it's just a squeaky belt or similar then probably not.

May just be a belt as you say, baby powder on it is the magic temp fix for that.

Could be a breather valve issue, sending to much vacuum into the cam covers. We've had that on the lesser FSI engines a few times, but not S6.

There is much less vacuum on cold start and lot of vacuum on over run, fits your symptoms. Would expect it to do it when warm at idle though.

It is doing it at idle....very noisy. The mechanic couldnt stay under car for long. Funny enough the emissions engine management light also stayed on today and he reckoned an air leak. Couldnt check it as engine too hot to examine as no space. this could be the problem ...

if this was the problem...how difficult for them. does the engine need to come out/down/moved.

Sorry, but I Need to see it, dont see enough S6's to know off hand where the likely valve is. Would want to test that first before getting really involved.

Would most probably be between inlet trunking and one of the rocker covers somewhere. Its right at teh back almost on the bulkhead on an RS4.

Love google images.

Have painted round a load of vacuum pipes, I suspect (but cant know for sure) some where under that Audi cover there is a connection to the inlet side of the engine, manifold or throttle body. Should be able to follow pipes along and find where it goes into the top of the cam covers. At some point between the inlet connection and the cam cover connection, should be a valve, difficult to explain but it should limit how much vacuum goes to the cam covers. Sometimes its built into the cam cover its self, is on VR6 engines for example.

IMPORTANT
When its idling and making the noise, take the oil filler cap off, it the noise goes and the engine runs a bit lumpy I'm right. If it makes no difference, we are barking up the wrong tree entirely. (Probably should have though of that bit sooner)

This is what the valve looks like on a 2.0FSI, so your looking for something like that, see how the vacuum/breather pipe goes from the cam cover to the inlet manifold. But I dont know exactly what the S6 one will be like,

As i said before we have changed a few of them on 2.0 FSI and TFSI, failed causing to much cam cover vacuum and loud squealing sound, goes away when oil filler cap removed and when engine load causes no manifold vacuum (open throttle).

A very similar thing used to happen on the old quattro turbo's, engine would whistle and squeal, if the filler cap was removed and the noise disappear 9/10 it was the rear cranshaft seal dried out. You want to hope its not that as its and engine/gearbox out to fix. Or maybe youre still under warranty

And thats why you should all go to your main dealer. Main dealer techs are not the money grabbing bodge it and charge twice as mush types that people think we are. AND We know what stuff like that.

Out of interest. How much effort is it to removed the oil cap when its running?
