Got my trolley jack out earlier on to use on a friends car and it will only lift half way. I've had it 7 or 8 years so i think its time to buy a new one. What minimum height dose it need to be for the Cerb (obviously i want as much lift as possible without spending silly money). Seen some cheap ones on eBay that lift from about 130 to 330mm but I'd like to go higher if possible? Seen some that state 150mm minimum height but is this too tall? Still not got the Cerb back so if anyone would be so kind to go outside with a tape measure........

I bought a Machine Mart Aluminium low entry racing jack.

It says it lifts 1250kg but when I used it on my Cerb, it made a popping sound on the way up and again on the way down. I took it back straight away.

The kerb weight of the Cerb is 1100kg. Maybe this is too close to the mark?

I drive on to bricks and use the heavy duty 2 ton one. (Make sure you chock the wheels!!!)

Costco have a 3T jack that goes under 90mm and fits my Cerb comfortably, but its very heavy. They also do an lightweight Ally 1.5 or 2T one from time to time. I can get my car up high enough to go on 0.5m stands with the 3T jack, but its at the upper limit of its range.

I got my very low 2 ton one from Machine Mart, I think it was around £50 but they have a really good range to suit just about everything.

I've got this one - It's been fine so far http://www.machinemart.co.uk/shop/product/details/...

The Sealey equivalent is ....http://www.ccw-tools.com/product.asp?P_ID=25783&af=1792

I've seen a few like these from different manufacturers, they all look remarkably similair, so I suspect they are all made at Wong Wons Jack Factory in China.

my neighbour has on of these and is very happy with it (porsche 911 carrera) but only rated at 1 1/4 ton and has a narrow track roller at front, i've got one very similar but will lift 2ton and has a wider track and 2 wheels at front but i will lift anything and everything with mine so needed a greater range. he paid £90 and i paid £115, both are perfectly good jacks and we are both pleased, its probably one of the tools that your use the most son why not spend the money.

i only wish i had seen these sooner though www.cjautos.org.uk

I have one of these, works well for me, nice and low and not too heavy.

This is a good one, gets under the front spoiler to the crossmember in one move. Its a big jack. Cost me £85 from costco lots for your money.

I bought exactly the same one like that in a 3 Tonne version from fleabay for about £95, made by Arcan:

http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/Arcan-3-ton-low-profile-trol...

Provides low entry (89mm) , high lift (540mm), and quick lift action together with its sturdiness.

Thats odd as you would have thought that given the Cerbs near on 50/50 weight distribution by jacking up one corner or even the whole front/rear you'd only be putting 1/4 or 1/2 of the Cerbs weight onto the lack, or maybe slightly more depending on how high your lifting it?

Good point about the oil/seals. I've not noticed any leakage and assumed that its a sealed unit? There is a little plastic cover that says DO NOT ADJUST on it. I'll have another look in the morning but i'm reluctant to mess about with something that could drop a car on me. smile

This one dose look really really good! I'm not sure if it might be a bit on the heavy side tho, as i tend to throw my current jack in the boot quite frequently for fixing friends cars etc. Maybe i need to buy two, one big and one small one? Oh and the lifts also! wink

that's the one i've got, not much heavier than a normal jack, the handle is removable and breaks down into 2 peices, got a 3ton one at work which are a bit heavy and i'm sure it would be easier to drag the car onto the jack than pulling that thing laugh

Heavy they are yes but they are sturdy and you wont get the "will it or wont it hold" scenario with using smaller jacks, id rather work safely with a jack well within its lifting capacity

I'd agree the 3T Arcan is a beast of a thing - I expect it'd go straight through the floor of the boot in a Cerb! However, it does go under the car easily and I agree is rock solid when you use it. I've bought a second one to save me having to go back and forth around the car to get her onto stands. I think its ~£75 in costco.
