Good finds.

Yet more proof of Mencken's view that the fundamental aim of practical politics...

Good grief. I read something in the Guardian.

And it was worthwhile.

Even the Romans knew that.

Interesting articles

There is allot of hysteria about Prostitution in this country. A combination of an old moral objection to the practice with a new Feminist agenda to end the 'exploitation' of women.

Generous rates of pay ensures that there is no shortage of willing workers in the industry. I'm sure there are some women forced into it aginst their will, but far less than media hysteria would have you believe.

Ultimatly if the government wanted to protect women in the industry they would legalise brothels and so help ensure that the women are both willing and over the age of 18.

But of course to do that they would have to actually want to help them rather than indulge in political posturing.

"Two excellent articles in The Guardian."

A fine example of an oxymoron.

I only caught the back half of the Paxman interview and just thought McShane sounded like a supercilious tit, but now reading the articles, I see he is...

Frightening selective sexing up of dubious stats, you can see how we went into iraq on WMD...

And the church a few centuries after. All those dissolutions, inquisitions, burnings at the stake, allegations of witchcraft etc. etc. distracted from the rate the church was plundering the funds from the populace.

I saw the Paxman interview it was great. Those are both good articles from the Guardian.

Slightly off topic but The Guardian has some excellent podcasts. The Science and technology ones are great as is their cycling one.

Obviously the paper is just for communists but it's not all bad. hehe

I don't tend to stick to one particular newspaper but find the Guardian often has much better written and neutral articles compared to the Times or Telegraph for example; particularly in the areas of science, technology and the arts.

I've never understood why people only stick to one paper for their whole life and band all the mainstream newspapers (of worthy) into particular social/political bands. Obviously they are influenced by one means or another, but in general it comes down to the particular article at any given time, not the supposed political allegiance. And by reading different papers over a period this in effect cancels this bias out anyway.
