First MOT for an SVA'd car?
Discussion
Oh noooo
Can open, worms everywhere.
Firstly its not SVA any more its IVA unless your asking this retrospectively .
In my personal experience there are no absolutes on this one and it depends who at the DVLA you talk to, and on what day.
Generally it seems to be, if registered as new using all new parts then its elegibale for a new number plate and an MOT on the 1st day of the 4th year on which it passed its test. If its not resisted as new, I.E. assembled from parts some or all of which were not new, and on a age related or Q plate. It will need one immediately after the SVA/IVA and every year after.
Edit - For lack of English

It's a retrospective question - actually a track car that was built, then kept off the road for years, then finally put through the SVA early this year (or maybe late '08, I can't remember). I know it's another two or three years before I need to MOT it, but wondering exactly which 'anniversary' it is?
...Presumably the SVA as it's on a 2001 plate, reflecting the date of build rather than SVA/registration?

We have had a lot of debate and varied information on this one as well - both direct to us from DVLA and through our customers.
The grey area is certainly around cars built from donor cars and issued with either an age related or Q plate.
Due to the confusion and no apparent standardised answer when you speak to DVLA we have taken to telling all of our customers to get an MOT immediately if their car is an age related or Q plated vehicle and then doing so (obviously!) every year.
This may be overkill if you want to challenge the point with the authorities but at about £40 seems like relatively cheap peace of mind to me. Afterall if you have just got through SVA/IVA the MOT should not really hold any fears (in theory at least!).
If it is a kit built from all new parts and registered as a new car then there is no issue at all - MOT due on third anniversary as with any other new car.
Not sure if this is helpful really - but is what we do now as a matter of course.
Neil.

Not quite right there Joe. If the car's on a 2001 plate then it needs an MoT every year if you want to use it on public roads. The fact that you've not used it on the road is irrelevant. If it's only used on the track then obviously you don't need to MoT it 'cos it's only on private road.
As an earlier poster said, if you've SVA'd it as a brand new car, then it's 3 years from date of first SVA (and now IVA) but if it's based on old parts and hence has an age related plate, it's first MoT is due 12 months from the SVA/IVA

It really does depend on who you talk to, DVLA wise that is.
Mines on a age related 1976, I did not require a MOT to tax the car for the 1st three years at the post office, the reminder came through without the MOT stipulation on it, I know people on "Q's" the same I also know people on a "new" reg that could not get their car taxed without an MOT during the 1st three years, taxing online often cures the problem.
All that aside its no real hassle to MOT the car for your own peace of mind.

That does raise another interesting point - it's due for tax at the end of this month! I think I'll go for the electronic reminder route.Presumably there's no harm in getting it MOT'd prematurely? I tend to be quite fickle with cars (so many toys, so little time!) so it probably won't be with me more than 12 or 18 months, so it would make sense to have an MOT some time before the three years is up.
What colin M50 has said is spot on, a new build ie everything new and one recon part, at the date of posting this msg 3/10/09 you got a 59 VRM, three years from the IVA pass date,1st MOT due.
If you use a donor vehicle for your build and then qualifys for enough componants from that one donor, and the doner is for instance prefix F (1989) the agency will give you a fresh prefix F (1989) off there system. you will need a MOT 1 year after your IVA.
If your build uses parts from all over the shop and you get a Qmark again your 1st MOT is due 1 year from the pass date of IVA.
