Dear All
I've owned a Netgear DG824M for about 6 months now.
Let me first state I consider myself to be an absolute novice with this technology.
I have two laptops each with a wireless card. When I was on virgin broadband I could plug the ADSL cable into the internet port and after a bit of fiddling I managed to get them both logged onto the internet wirelessly.
I even managed to plug my xbox into my laptop with a cross-over cable and then wirelessly go gaming on-line through my laptop and the gateway. (my greatest achievement to date although small in comparision to some of things I've read about on this forum)
Now here's my problem.
I've just moved house and signed up to NTL broadband.
Without using the gateway at first I followed the NTL CD-ROM by conecting my laptop to their modem with the supplied ethernet cable and got onto the internet.
I thought I would do this frist to establish a connection. During this setup the only thing that worried me slightly was it asked me to chose between my wirless card and my ethernet port to access NTL. I chose the ethernet port as this is what I was using at the time.
The problem now is that the ethernet acble (from the NTL cable modem)does not fit into the ADSL 'hole' in the back of the gateway. It does however fit into one of the 4 ethernet ports.
Can I still use this product as my wireless solution? Can the NTL ethernet cable plug into one of the ethernet ports and somehow be routed through to the wireless transmitter for me to carry on as before?
So far all I've learnt is maybe I can use the gateway as a router only and switch of the modem element as this is now being performed by the NTL canle modem. I wouldn't have a clue how to achieve this even if it is the correct solution!
Could anyone offer me any help/guidance.

Cheers

I don't think you're going to have much luck I'm afraid.

I've got a DG834G - very similar piece of kit. From what I can tell from the admin interface, it's hardwired to use the ADSL port as the WAN port. I don't think you can reconfigure it to use one of the ethernet ports.

You're best bet is probably going to be to flog the DSL version you have and get a simple wireless router that has an ethernet port as it's WAN port.

You'll be out of luck - you need a cable modem version. Plugging the modem into the ethernet ports on the box won't work.

Thanks for your feedback. You have saved me hours of time trying to do something that can't be done.

I've justed ordered a Netgear MR814 from 'Insight' (Good site and cheap prices).

Should be wireless again by the weekend
