Does it do this when hot or cold? Is the fuel tank less than half full? If they get hard to start on low fuel it's normally the lift pump in the tank on it's way out. Temporary fix is to just keep the tank brimmed!

Don't forget it's the same engine in the P38 Range rover if you want to do a search on the Land rover forums.

Latest update !! the relays are working and power to all the new glow plugs. it still struggles to start under 12 deg outside temp banghead someone has told their is a sensor that needs replacing apparantly a common fault , please can anyone tel me where the sensor is (picture would be good) and what sensor I need .... apparantly the sensor tells the glow plugs to stay on when it gets colder, if that makes any sense...

Once again thanks

Can't really help, but mine had hot start issues when I got it. Apparently even when the engine is warm it should use the glowplugs and an enriched fuel mixture to aid starting. After a couple of months mine cured itself so I never bothered looking into it. Might be putting my tds touring up for sale now I've got the 540i I don't have a need for it any longer.

Thanks for all replys and having gone through most things and 1 that was listed about keeping the fuel tank full seem to have worked !! hence the pump from the tank and fuel line may have a slight leak and is running back to the tank, As I have a old 324td which had a similar starting problem I fitted a one way fuel valve befor the filter which cured the problem wink I have now ordered an 8mm one way valve and will be fitting it shortly.......
will keep you posted on the situation, if this works as it did on my old 324td which still starts on the first instance, this may be a worthwile modification for the cost of less than a fiver !!
