Guys,

Im in talks with a few fellow builders to develop our own car.
Im after hints tips advice on a base 4wd platform for our planned mid engined supercar.

Im toying with the idea of using a platform thats already out there i.e. teh 4wd system from a TT or an impreza, but we are right at teh beginning here so any thoguht and or recommendations would be appreciated.

Cheers

Mark

There is a chap in the US that has built a bike derived V8 4x4 track car using IIRC a custom transfer box. I did a quick google but couldn't find it. Sorry.

Generally the more information you can give the more relevant the feedback will be.

One comment I'd make is the both Audi & Subaru tend to place the engines well forward, so even if it were a simple case of flipping it (not likely for lots of reasons) - you'd end up with a rear-engined car, and as big a 911 fan as I am some would argue that after 40+ years of evolution it's still not right... wink

Was doing some research into bike based V8s last year, an admittedly only found a couple - but nothing under £13k. Anyone know of any more cost effective ones out there?

(just realised that I'm assuming by 'platform' you mean engine+drivetrain - if just the latter, please clarify)

The Prodive P2, designed by Peter Stevens using an impreza 4x4 platform, could be close to what you're looking for inspiration.

I've had a good look, but just can't find it. Perhaps a proper description will help jog someone memory.

The car was jokingly described as a V8 Go-Kart - as it wasn't much bigger. It was a track only car, had a bike derived V8 that was mounted next to the driver for weight distributions reasons. It had a fully enclosed body and it was black / dark grey in colour. Most of the components the chap had designed and machined himself out of billet. It really was/is a work of art.

Could it be the DP cars ?

Pity, sounds intriguing - guess if you've the resources handy you can do something like this as a labour of love, but non-starter as a commercial prospect.

Italo - are you trying to scare the guy? wink The X1 seems to have sank with trace (why are the names Borrowman & Prendergast - the guys behind it - naggingly familiar?) and aren't both front engined?

Wouldn't be this, would it? http://www.dpcars.net/

They seem to be quite prolific, there seems to be bike V8, and AWD, and if so you're right: ain't much bigger than a Go-Kart.

Somehow this also came up in my search: http://sundoulos.us/index.html - check out the Sha-do... (shudders) shouldn't that be Nou-veau?

Mjpmark, only the plus side - if this guy can do it.....

Edit: quick draw, Italo wink should have refreshed before posting DP link

They're the guys that designed the Minari kitcar......smile, yes both front engined, but was under the impresion they wanted to design using a Audi TT platform ?....but I just read they wanted to do a mid-engine csportscar......my mistake...frown

The Impreza and the TT both have their engines in front of the front axle, which is at odds with the mid-engined aspect of your project.

Why bother with the 4wd anyway? Ultimas and Radicals have posted some very impressive circuit times with 2WD

40-50k is the norm for an Ultima, as much as 100k has been known.... I had a budget of 28k and spent just under 50k and beleive me I made lots of savings over factory prices!!!
