Ernie Harbon refused to pay the £400 fine
A Derbyshire driver who said he would rather go to prison than pay a fine from a speed camera has been jailed for two weeks.
Ernie Harbon, 62, says he is protesting about what he claims is the use of the cameras to raise money.
Mr Harbon, from South Normanton, was caught speeding by a mobile camera in Codnor last year.
On Tuesday he was sent to prison for two weeks after again refusing to pay the £400 fine.
Highway Code
Mr Harbon was pictured driving at 38mph in a 30mph zone but claimed the limit was not clearly marked.
The police and Derbyshire Safety Camera Partnership have denied using the cameras as a device to generate revenue.
They also pointed out that it is clearly spelled out in the Highway Code that areas with street lights are always 30 mph zones.
Mr Harbon is expected to spend at least a week in Leicester Prison.

WHAT!!!!! Unbeleivable.....
How the hell was it a £400 fine for 8mph over I wonder...

nothing but quangos set up to make money for the government.
I saw a VERY interesting docu. on quangos before Xmas. The Convers. were critised for having too many and letting the country be run by unvoted people. Labour (as with all things) promised to rectify this.
What have labour done to quangos so far? Close down all the ones run by convservative people, set up replacements (in some cases a 2 for 1 replacement), and guess what? All the Labour MPs who didnt get their area are now incharge of a quango.
So now we have more quangos than ever... all being run by labour people who the country voted AGAINST in elections. Some of these MPs who didnt get a seat are now incharge of £billions tax payers money whilst they are incharge of these Quangos. Some of them are incharge so many different quangos they have to work 120 hour weeks apparently... go figure?
...thats what I remember from the TV prog.

Actually

Something is wrong in this report....How the hell do you bump up a 60 quid conditional offer to 400 quid at Court. Unless costs of CPS at say 300 notes has been included - very doubtful. More to it somewhere along the line.
Oh by the way roads with street lamps are not always 30 so they got that wrong too.

Not knowing the bit of road, why is he a 'hero'

Hmmm, interesting point. And it was just up the road from me. Be interesting to find out...
I saw it on the local news yesterday. My honest opinion as a PH'er........is it was a blatent NSL road reduced to 30. It had a slight bend in it and a T-junction which had about 200m visibility each side. Surrounded by fields.....no houses to be seen.
The news report did say it was a £60 fine BTW

I have to say also - it doesnt need to be clearly marked if the section of road has the relevant lamp posts at the relevant interval.... he should have re-read his highway code.....
Good that he took a stand. But I doubt that many other people would - It doesnt look good to have a criminal conviction (prison sentence) for employers etc....
How about we club together and pay his fine for him. I'm up for it ... anyone local enough to get in touch with this guy?
62 years old, being sent to prison for something like that. Friggin' stupid system. Meanwhile GBHers were probably walking out of court all day long laughing (last time I sat outside a courtroom all day all I saw were scrotes with big grins walking free). They saved the real criminal to last (girlfriend allegedly running an orange light - ooo lock up your children).
